Publicly they say they process 100 metric tons through this pipeline from Coke/Stepan/Mallinckrod. But insiders have said the real numbers are closer to 1500 metric tons of dried leaf.

"Coke began taking cocaine out of its formula in 1903 and became completely cocaine-free in 1929, but coca leaf extract is still used as an active ingredient. The ecgonine alkaloid, which gives cocaine its effect on the brain, is extracted from the coca leaf before processing.
The Stepan Corporation, a New Jersey-based chemical processing company, performs the extraction on the coca leaves. Stepan has an arrangement with the Drug Enforcement Agency and is the only company allowed to legally import the coca leaf into the United States. Stepan imports 175,000 kilograms of coca leaves into the United States each year. That is a street value equivalent to roughly $21 billion of cocaine, according to the United Nations.


After the cocaine is processed by Stepan it is hauled away from the facility in armored trucks and then sold to Mallinckrodt, a pharmaceutical company whose United States headquarters are based in St. Louis, Missouri. Cocaine hydrochloride is used in a certain optometry procedure that requires its use as a vasoconstrictor to restrict bleeding..I doubt they would need it in the amounts described though. Its actually a schedule 2 controlled substance for this reason instead of a schedule 1. Schedule 1 is high abuse potential with no accepted medical value. While schedule 2 is high abuse potential with limited medical value i believe.

Cocaine is used in a myriad of products from cough syrup to anesthesia. As a pain relief, it's properties are perfect as it's topical, oral, and injectable. The dentist makes use of it in lidocaine, over the counter products from muscle rubs to tooth ache remedies. Just because a drug is on the schedule does not mean it doesn't have medicinal use in one format or another

My first "official" job out of high school was with Stepan Chem., I started out as the switchboard operator then after 6 months was promoted to the laboratory as a lab clerk.

It was a good job, good boss, good coworkers.

Sounds like it's really changed because I mostly dealt with surfactants and stuff like that for cleaning supplies, hair shampoos, conditioners, etc.
