Do you have mercy independent of your job? It's a switch, something you don't lose sleep over. As far as intent, why should someone with a broken heart care that the person who broke it had theirs in the right place? In the end, all this tells me is that people who punish severely never really take such things seriously, because it's either 'it was my job' or 'that wasn't my intent' and never ever 'that is indeed what I did.'
