It's not like the fallacy that is presented. It's more akin to work release, slavery, or having something so massive hanging over you that working for these asshats is the only other option.

Of course, maybe there are still a few cohorts that come through the way that's claimed in the advertisements.

I was actually considered to be a success.
Always towing the company line.
Always covering everyone's tracks.
Always cleaning up perfectly.
Always easily convinced myself.

And on the surface, that's exactly what I was.
What else could I be? That's the environment I was in.

Sure, it ate me up on the inside, but I just buried myself under a ton of work until I didn't have time to think at all. It ended up in several decades of absolute zen. Not a thought of my own in sight, and when my thoughts did occasionally surface, they were so foreign and not in line that even I didn't recognize them, so I just buried them again. Wasn't hard in that situation.

I abandoned the US a long time ago.

I am onboard with the highlighted piece above, though. I have this argument with my mother. She always says, "It's OK, because we know how it all ends."

I argue that that is not the point at all. God wants us to fight against evil, not sit around waiting for our comeuppance. I take little comfort knowing everything will be OK in the end, while I see so much suffering around me. I might be able to relieve just a bit of that suffering before I am gone.

He was visiting Skull and Bones, went in through the front door (something reserved for presidents, the rest of us go in the side or back) and had a following of what looked like student press. Rice was with him. They brought him into a center room, set up a camera, ridiculously bright lights, and had a short photo op.

I've never been star struck, so I've literally sat with people for ages without knowing who they were on the bigger stage. So, if there were other times...who knows. But it was hard to ignore the attention he was getting that time. Even I'm not THAT star blind.

I remember inhuman crazy sounds seemed to always be emanating from the theater classes when I had to be in that part of campus. Loony sounding stuff.
