This extraordinary twister-like cloud formation over central London is latest example of extreme weather worldwide

Within an hour, its devastating work was done. Hailstones the size of marbles had battered Battersea and flashfloods caused chaos in Clapham. Lightning lit up the blackened sky. Taken from the 17th floor of the London Television Centre on the South Bank, this stunning picture shows the enormity of the cloud that heralded Tuesday's storms - the latest in this summer of dramatic contrasts.

Only four miles away the tennis at Wimbledon was rained off yet again as the weather was blamed for a big fall in this year's attendance.

Two girls aged 13 and 15 were treated for serious burns after being struck by lightning at the end of the school day at Ipswich High School.

The East of England Ambulance Service said the strike had blown the girls' shoes apart.

'They were struck simultaneously,' said a spokesman. 'They both had entry and exit wounds on their arms and feet.' He said the girls, who remained conscious throughout their ordeal, had not suffered life-threatening injuries.

The stormy start to July follows the third wettest June on record.

According to Met Office statistics, 105.3mm or 41ins of rain fell last month. Only 1912 and 1982 were wetter.

Moments after its passing, the sunshine-was out again. Commuters battling-their way home in the evening rush hour shook out soaking umbrellas and shrugged off steaming raincoats. Nick Ricketts of the Met officesaid: 'There had been an extended period of cold wet weather. When the sun finally arrived, it warmed the surface temperature and that mix caused the storms to begin.' Don't put away your umbrella (or sunscreen) just yet. According to the weathermen, our mixed-up summer hasn't finished with us.

It looks like a normal severe thunderstorm.

There might be a slight rotating base formation within the storm, but it doesn't look well defined.

Also, there is no twister formation, it's a hail and rain core.

I see nothing alarming here... but what do I know, eh.

for us in tx, may, june and july are supposed to be hot. and dry. sunny for weeks on end...
mid to upper 90s this time of year.

Instead, july has been rain every day. sun shines a few moments or so, only to precede yet another storm. over and over and over.

kids can't play, spiders and snakes find anyplace they can for shelter. bad hair days for all. sure, mow the lawn and wash the car, it wont matter. more rain expected. lakes abandoned, amusement parks emptied, flooded streets and houses. And i read that the west coast is having record heat. 128 for death valley accor. to weather channel

80 percent rain today. 80 percent tomorrow. temps stay in the 80s for ANOTHER week...this is REALLY starting to freak me out.

I have grass growing on my grass, plants are taking over when july usually sees brown grhappy happ joy joyed dirt, and plants wilted.

each day the weather person will say, downpours for 3 days, then we should dry out. then the next day he will add another day to his downpour list. this has been going on since the end of MAY.

extreme nutty weather is happening folks. I am seeing it myself. lots of us are.

Anyone see the weird plane underneath the storm cloud?

This definantly looks like some sort of weather manipulation going on.... could this be the reason that the national mall was evacuated yesterday?

Perhaps, but...

News release
5 July 2007
Record-breaking June rainfall figures

Provisional statistics from the Met Office have today shown that June has been the wettest since records began in 1914.

The UK-wide average figure of 134.5 mm has beaten the previous highest June total of 121.2 mm in 1980. Records for England and Northern Ireland have also been broken.

The month saw some extremely high daily rainfall totals, with 103.1 mm falling in the 24-hour period ending at 10 p.m. on 25 June in Fylingdales, North Yorkshire. At this stage, it is not possible to say whether intense rainfall events are caused by climate change.

However, there is an expectation of heavier extreme rainfall events in most places as climate warms and the atmosphere becomes moister.

Chief Scientist at the Met Office, John Mitchell said: "In the UK, extreme rainfall is likely to increase in winter, but in summer the predictions are unclear. Improved modelling and understanding in the future will help us to reduce this uncertainty for the UK."

Despite the large amounts of rain across many parts of the country, the average UK temperature has been above the long-term average. June 2007 had a mean temperature of 13.7 °C, while the long-term average is 12.6 °C.

The higher-than-normal mean UK temperature for June follows a trend that has become a regular feature over recent months. The last time mean UK temperatures were below average was in March 2006.

The Met Office works with government, the public and the private sector to forecast and advice on the possible consequences and risks of climate change. With the 'normal' baselines changing, we all need to seek advice to make informed planning decisions and begin to put in place adaptation measures to meet the challenges posed by climate change.

Hi Res,
My son of 8 showed me this picture that he took last summer outside out back yard here in Scotland.
It might take a while to load with a slow connection.
