These two couples have food supplies but they screw up and are clueless about wild edibles and it then becomes ruinous when disaster strikes.

Every child played with maple samaras yet how many ate them? The Native Americans did. You could add them to your beans and rice.

Umami/glutamates and fat are key. (Bacon happens to have both, which is why it works well in a lot of things. There is supposed to be seaweed that is bacon-y, I'd like to try it sometime.) Red wine, mushrooms, peas, Parmesan cheese, there are many other things that help increase umami in a dish.

Fats are what gives the feeling of being satiated. Often cravings for other things, like desserts/sweets, are actually a craving for more fat.

If you want cheaper recipes...ignore the ones I post on foodie threads. Which I do a lot. The trick to finding cheaper and in all honesty, better recipes.. Skip the epicurious lot and all the higher end sites for foodies. And go to places like this. [link to thelemonbowl.com (secure)]
Go for food truck not high end cuisine. It simply makes more sense. "I'm hungry" does not need to amount to...look at this neat thing. There is a trick.

The 'trick' to cooking is to learn how to deal with what you have at hand. Fuck (pardon my French) recipes. You take what you have and make the best of it. You do not shop for a bunch of dinners. You shop for what is on discount. In other words you are not looking/shopping for a specific dinner, you are buying what's cheap. And then you learn how to cook.

You might learn to appreciate a different cut of beef, or maybe an organ meat.

The recipe comes in later once you have your ingredients. Stock your pantry with spices so you can simmer anything long enough and make it taste good. Or at least palatable. If you are looking at 'holy crap it has all gone to shit' cooking...it is not a bad idea to overstock your spices.

I'm sure there are 'manly men' here who will claim just eat an MRE, and I have a years worth of Mountain House, enough for everyone in my family, I get it. But dealing with, sorry OP, women and children and complexity. You should, as a man, be able to bring home a bit of complexity to the meal.

You all have your areas...here...we have crazy fungi. Dry, powder them, add them (at 16% protein) to every meal. Just fricking grab whatever you know is edible and dry it and add it to everything.

If it doesn't taste good...mince it and add it to what does. I've done 27 ingredient salads with weeds....it was a competition for sure...but you mince the greens, toss them and make a dressing and then all of a sudden your salad is half a meal .

ANd get yourselves some chickens....

Lance, what a terrific post! One of your best ever!!!

I'm not so determined to have "cheap" food - I am determined to have plenty of food. That generally means less expensive, to have larger stocks. The easier things to store are generally the cheaper ones, such as rice and beans.

You make perfect sense in not buying to put meals and menus together, but buying to stock and store, then finding ways to put those things together - this is what I am trying to do - and it's about quantity before quality - quality comes on the stove - or the fireplace - or the butane burner - or the wood stove or camp stove or whatever you must cook on by that time. You are perfect at this - at putting things together because you have them, not just because you went and bought them to put together.

What a blessing you are to so many, Lance! You do more for our storage and cooking than any two dozen people put together can do!

Thank you for your wisdom and your uncommon common sense!

I think you are likely right - craving fats, and I do worry about those who are not including ample good fats in their storage of foods.

Do you happen to know where the bacon-y sea weed is found? Surely would like to find it! I mean, where is it on beaches? Is it available in Chinese grocery stores, perhaps? Sounds dreamy, as in so healthy for us, yet satisfying a couple kinds of hunger we all will experience.

Thank you very, very much for this post!

I think this is where the idea of a 'chicken in every pot' and the Sunday meal comes in. As I said earlier, either here or in the foodie thread, East Indians are not by 'religion' vegetarians. Yes, it was here with the ghee post...anyhow...But in reality...The Sunday meal, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc' were/are feast times.

So once you look at Sunday meals, and Holy Days in that light you might see that our ancestors were not idiots. Those days are for pulling out old family recipes, making complex meals, adding deserts, making gravy, using the remains to make stock for the next week etc. Simple food for, dare I say it, the children of the Most Holy God.

Sorry (I'm Canadian I apologize when I may have stepped out of line), but perhaps we are not meant to eat what we desire all the time. Sometimes...and praise your President for allowing industrial hemp but also leaving it up to the States under your 10th Amendment, a bowl of hemp seed gruel (that's what Oliver was asking for) is enough because it is nourishing.

I'm into a rhapsody so I will keep posting, hemp seed is amazing, and now that Canada has competition, the price should drop dramatically. I'm not going to get into the foodie benefits of it, go do your own research. But yes, if America goes back to it's 'deeply rooted' cannabis basis...you can live on the stuff. But for a pound here it is like $17-20 CAD which translates to about $15.00 FRN's but it should be about $0.05 a LB.

With the topic of this thread, beans and rice, the addition of some spices and some hemp seeds will take you through years of your life. Hemp seeds will give you the good oils (perfectly balanced at that), a fine nuttiness but of course...you would still want to add butter...cheerio!

If you've been following the news about food shortages and high prices just around the corner, you are wisely stocking food, including beans and rice.

I am doing the same, because beans and rice are cheap, though they won't be for long, and healthy, as well. I just can't stand beans.

So, please tell me your tricks, secrets, hints to make beans and rice actually enjoyable, instead of just a way not to starve.

A wise forager can gather seaweed, periwiwnkles, limpets, mushrooms, rock lichen, berries, grasshoppers, grass seed, maple syrup, white clover blossoms, snails, etc and signifcantly boost the calories. There is free food but most don't know it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72341210

A wise post - those add up to a number of needed calories and are very easy to find. Be careful on mushrooms - be certain you know the good, safe ones. Periwinkles and limpets are easy to find in the smallest of rocky streams. Grass seed and clover everywhere.

There is a deal of food available, even for those on the move, if they just look where they stand.

This is the way I eat my pinto beans. Got to have some Oklahoma cornbread(no sugar) on the plate, then you have to have about 1/3 the plate filled with some well done Pan fried red potatoes, then you finish the plate with the beans, and enough bean juice (pot liquor) to soak the cornbread. Then I used to top the plate with some spicy hot vinegar(like sport peppers packed in vinegar), but now I just grab a handful of Hot, Salty Dill pickles piled in the middle. Each bite would include beans and either cornbread or fried potato and a slice of pickle. I would take that plate over a steak and be happy. So good.

Always remember, bad food is good when you are hungry enough.
 Quoting: FlamesNotInFront 30685918

Flames, I believe this to be true, and if I am down to beans and rice, it will be the best food ever eaten!!

On the other hand, I fear many will die from actual bad food - the desperation of hungry people, starving people, will lead to taking horrible chances on what they eat just to stop the pain of the worst hunger they've ever felt.

This will also obtain in seeing water - a terribly thirsty person will grab the first water they find and think that drinking contaminated water cannot be as awful as the thirst they feel.

Hard times ahead, Flames, hard times ahead. I will be very thankful for the beans and rice and clean water to cook them in. Yumm - luv me sum beanzzz!!!!!

A good prepper has milk thistle on hand as that is what they give when all else fails in mushroom poisoning.

It takes a sharp observant person to pick mushroom except for a few like either growing mushrooms on dead wood on purpose or gathering morels. You need a mentor for that.

And how many calories did you acquire? Was it worth the risk?

Milk thistle will detox the liver like nothing else will. Say an alcoholic is end stage having abused the liver terribly. Milk thistle given to them will improve a bad situation and then rally and can tell everyone they area sorry and make peace with their children. That is priceless.

Growing Shiitake in wood by drilling and sowing it.

Preppers started that inthe seventies.

Finding morels. They are distinctive. The worst way to honk off a local wild edible mentor is to take every freakin' morel in a selfish way. It's rude and thoughtless and bad form.

The mushrooms you see on the surface are the tip of the iceberg and the mushroom does NOT have a root system that just goes straight down and into a ball but hasa mycelium network that is VAST. Careless harvesters ruin that sweet spot that allowed say some Morels to regularly come up.

Thatis why some careles OAF who willy-nilly harvests is not just sefish but blunders and ruins that sweet spot. Note how carefully they harvested those morels and note where so next year will come back and hopefilly can gather more.

Americans are not used to eating lentils but you should start eating them and rotating them. Why? They are easy to rehydrate. You need some easy meals as access to water may be difficult.

Water is heavy. 5 gallons of water is 41.7lbs. Can your wife and child haul that back? Nope. Not over uneven terrain. Do you have a way that someone can do so? Are you unprepared and figure you will wing it? That will fail and gets people dehydrated.

Plus you need to figure out how to clean up every day plus food prep. You figured this out right? You figured out how to wash laundry with no power...right?

Lentils saves you part of this water weight versus hard pinto beans.
