It sounds hideous though. Raw meat? I do like raw milk. It’s the best! :)

Here in Tx. They put cilantro in pinto beans. It’s so good! :)

I realized this too and started buying lentils. I think they taste just like beans but cook in less than a half hour. My Mr. doesn’t like them though but he’d eat them if he had to.

Hot sauce. Tabasco specifically. Hot sauce makes anything seem edible.

Liquid smoke, smoked ham hock, onions, green peppers, paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, olive oil. Delicious.

Hot sauce - PACE HOTTTTT.

Garlic salt, pepper, and a little butter. Oh, and not burning it. If your feeling spicy, some slap your momma.

There's a Puerto Rican dish called Spotted Rooster that is black beans and rice with a bunch of cilantro chopped up and mixed in. Pretty tasty.

I'll make lentils and rice and sprinkle apple cider vinegar and some soy sauce on it for flavor.

And there's a few canned hams in the preps for my favorite - curried lentils and ham. I imagine the ham would taste pretty good with some black eye peas...

The cheap .89 bottles of spices are a good way to have some flavor on hand, especially bay leaves. Just fish them out before serving.

You can make black bean and rice patties that can be eaten in between a hamburger bun. With all of the regular fixins' like mustard, mayo, ketchup, tomato, onions and whatever else, they're tasty.

Chickpea felafel is great for fast food or fried chicken cravings.

Don’t waste time or money on mixes.

Soak dried chickpeas overnight.
If you keep them longer, rinse and drain, let them sprout little tails if you like.

Grind them up In any whirling blade.

Season to taste with minced onion, parsley. Cumin, coriander powder, cayenne turnieric are good but salt and black pepper are good too. If you fry chicken try those seasonings too. Paprika and mustard.

Make patties, croquettes or balls no larger than a golf ball.

Fry in oil.

Serve on summer salad or with the fixings of a traditional fried chicken dinner.

You can experiment with combining this with canned salmon.

If you eat the paste before you season it you will notice it is very much like chocolate chip cookie dough. It’s tempting to season with vanilla and are what happens with chunks of dark chocolate and hazelnuts.

Truff Sauce

Barbecue sauce might give it some flavor.

Next time I go to the store I'm gonna look closer at the types of canned beans. I bet they have alot we are unaware of.

Sure there is baked beans & refried beans...but I'll bet there are others we just never noticed.

For rice...look at all the different flavors of rice-a-roni for some ideas.

Get three slices of decent quality slab bacon made in the store's butcher department. It's cheaper and better quality. Cut that raw with scissors. Cook on less than medium heat.

Chop a vidalia onion add to the skillet. Add some minced garlic.

Take a potato, rinse, and poke a fork in it a few times. Microwave it. Take it out, and put it briefly in the freezer. When chilled for ten minutes, remove and dice it. Add to the skillet.

That is a cheap nutritious meal that only need salt and pepper.

Take 3 slices of bacon as above. Mash some pintos and black beans. Ad to the skillet with minced garlic and cilantro. Finish with a little mexican cheese. Serve with a suez of basmati rice.

Variants based on market prices with the above recipe

Scambled or poached eggs.

Pork loin slow cooked in the crock pot.

Chicken thighs same.

Fresh catch fish.

Steamed veggies from the garden.

Marinated veggies in italian dressing that are drained and grilled in a grill basket.

Cornbreads of various kinds.

No kneed bread.

Homemade pita.

Sundried tomatoes in a vingarette.

Peanuts are a legume too. A gingery peanut sauce over shredded vegetables or vegetables and rice is good.

Depression Dra dad always liked peanut butter sandwiches with chili.

Then there’s tofu. You can blend the silken kind of the cheaper soft kind and sneak into smoothies or blended desserts. If you don’t want to take time to press out the water you can cube it and scramble it with eggs or like eggs.

Cuban style is the best

Serve a side based on whatever fruit is on the trees ready for harvest like.

Persimmons mashed on homemade ice cream.

Berry pie with crn starch to thicken it.

Macaroons

None of the above are expensive.

A Mexican could whip up something tasty I’m sure

Compile a list of all of the different flavoring suggestions here, and next time you make beans, pick and choose. There are some awesome recipes suggested here, but the fact is that there is no specific recipe, toss in flavorings, meat and spices that you like, or from what you have on hand.

Be sure and include corn bread when you prepare beans.

This redneck dessert was a frugal survival food as the calories are boosted plus it doesn't heat up the whole kitchen in summer like baking. This is great camping food and easy to eat. Any 12 year with common sense can make these.

Nobody will complain about beans and rice IF you create the semblance of abundance with a modest dessert.

Keep morale high especially in tough times.
