There is a vastamount of spices and ingredients in groceries since 1990. Our ancestors grew most things and dried,canned, and pickled them. When they ran out, then that was that until the harvest next year.
Taste is not as important as frugality and practiality.
To keep up morale, a dessert is ten times more important, and just having a little is what is vital to offset all the beans and rice.
