The 19-month-old girl plunged from the vessel in San Juan on Sunday afternoon
Her grandfather is believed to have slipped while holding the girl by a window
She landed on the hard concrete of the Puerto Rico dock and died in hospital
The girl was on holiday with her family on the Freedom of the Seas cruise ship to

The kids dad was a south bend Indiana cop. The grandfathers name is Salvatore Anello.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69897413

Thank you! Here's an update:

* child is the daughter of South Bend police officer Alan Wiegand.

* initial media reports indicted that the girl's grandfather, Salvatore Anello, lost his grip while holding the girl.

* what really happened: the girl was playing with her grandfather in a dining hall on the 11th deck. The dining area has large windows, and one pane was open. The grandfather sat the girl in the window and lost his balance, and the girl fell to her death.

I thought it was crazy to have opening windows so high up - this shows the window. It's above shoulder height, the grandfather must have been holding the child pretty high..

I had the same thoughts about it being crazy to have an window that opens like that. In any case it will be the cruise line that has to pay out the bucks...all because of a stupid, stupid man....
 Quoting: FeedYourHead

Maybe he was the one who opened the window to get a better view for his granddaughter? it was the only window open.

Now that we know the father is a cop I strongly suspect foul play. ANYTIME a cop's immediate family dies in an odd/unusual way expect the worst.

He held her up so she could bang on the window like she does at her brother's hockey games. Her feet were on the railing near the window and he let her go to lean foward onto the glass. He thought the glass was there........

That is the newest story I have heard on how this happened. The Grandfather and parents all had to be sedated at the hospital because they are so upset....

Those poor poor parents.

hmmmm I heard yesterday on the news that he was holding her so that she could push on the glass, something she liked to do with windows..

totally different from the other stuff I'm reading here!!

but the old man could at least have made sure the window was NOT OPEN when he let her push outwards, thus speeding up her fall and his losing control of her!!!!

and why are there windows that high in a child's play area anyway?

or was it a child's room? who knows!!!?????

This report says the grandfather was not holding the child and she was in a play area. If that's the case this is on the cruise line, not the grandfather.

It's funny that everyone here claims to know that the media does not ever have the correct story but will quickly believe what they print if it means you can belittle and shame someone you know nothing about.

Stop judging people because you read some story about them. The media prints whatever will cause an uproar and doesn't care how accurate a story is, I thought you people knew that.

There aren't no "play areas" next to windows, those are casual seating areas, so family is trying to damage control and blame RC for the grandfather's carelessness and stupidity.

The area of possible concern would be the whirlpools located near the windows, but from my recollection those are all fixed glass windows without the ability to open.

Very sad situation.

But its not on the cruise line.

Without those windows the enclosed area there would become unbearably hot in the Caribbean sun. They are to allow fresh air into this area that is mostly sheltered from the windows and draft when at sail.

The window and railing below it is as high as any of the railing in the ship. There is nothing any more inherently unsafe with this "window" than there is with any balcony or deck railing in other parts of the ship.

What happened here could also also happen any outdoor part of the ship.

Very sad. But the cruise did nothing wrong.

10% of Indiana residents are intellectually challenged, the condition formally officially called “retarded”.

25% of children in some Indiana school districts require special education.

Indiana has very bad medical service. One of the ways we know our healthcare is so poor is that our infant mortality rates are so high.

It’s not just an unhealthy culture but a health- resistant culture. They think it’s selfish and self centered to take care of yourself. Then too they are so mean to each other! Very odd.

All my relatives but a few got the hell out and I came back to the family farm in some fog or haze of some kind. First thing I noticed was how all the Hoosiers tremor like bugs in the old Rais commercials. Then how far they are. It’s shocking how far Hoosiers are— and I came from Denver/Boulder so I found it very shocking. Then I realized they are retarded and on top of that they all have auditory processing difficulty. Now some of our physicians are dishonest and unethical people who like to exploit the baI it’s and lack of education of our innocent Hoosiers and that’s not right.

Anyway, it’s a world apart from the blue states.

Maybe a good lawyer could find good functional medicine specialists to trace out how Monsanto, Indiana’s medical monopoly, poor healthcare and toxic psychological culture all impaired this Grampas judgement. It wasn’t his fault. He was made impulsive and reckless by all the chemical overload in his environment and his food.

Not exactly

This is not a case of an unknowing child approaching an open window and falling out because the window was defective or improperly positioned. Rather, this is a case about an adult man, Chloe’s step grandfather who, as surveillance footage unquestionably confirms: (1) walked up to a window he was aware was open; (2) leaned his upper body out the window for several seconds; (3) reached down and picked up Chloe; and (4) then held her by and out of the open window for thirty four seconds before he lost his grip and dropped Chloe out of the window," the cruise line wrote in its motion to dismiss.

One of readers comments on the video - This is the man’s defense, he says he is colorblind and couldn’t detect the tinted closed windows from the clear open one.

“What you see from this angle is a deceptive. What looks like the frame of the window is not, he is leaning over a wooden safety rail. Beyond that, maybe 12"-18" or so, is the window frame, which is a bit below the height of the wooden rail, and is just thick enough to stand a small child on, 4-6" perhaps. To each side of where he stood, the window glass above this rail was closed. But I still can't see how anyone would not realise the window was open when leaning over the wooden rail, unless his faculties were severely diminished for whatever reason. “
