There is no such thing as dairy free baked goods. It must have milk, cream, butter and eggs. It's about exercising and how much you consume of a thing. You're not supposed to drink milk as a beverage. It's an ingredient or a treat. The chances of getting mad cow from Milk is almost 0, it's pasteurized. People eat nearly raw meat, that is what's a risk.

You obviously don't bake. French bread is not French bread if it contains ANY of that stuff. Cookies are basically solid butter-and few desserts are vegan-but "baked goods" do not have to have dairy in them.

Mad Cow is a prion disease. Cows, deer, & humans all can get prion diseases. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans randomly shows up-usually when someone is middle aged unless they are a hunter, those are the only people that develop it at a young age. The deer version is not transmittable to humans according to the CDC.

No.

The disease is caused by proteins called prions. There are different types of prion. They 'unfold' into shapes which make up the tissues of the body.

In mad cow, and other prion diseases, a 'mis-shapen' prion infects the host and contaminates the already existing healthy prions, causing them to become 'mis-shapen' too.

What you end up with is are blobs of tissue that no longer perform the function that they once did and continue to spread, replacing good tissue with bad.

A bit like cancer for the nervous system.

It can take 2-8 years for the disease to start effecting and killing you. It will come out of nowhere and you'll be dead within 6 months to a year. It's always fatal.

Re: Mad cow disease comeback: UK on verge of second epidemic as people ‘silently infected'
my mother was a psychiatric nurse when bse first got in the papers. I was about 6. A consultant told her to not let anyone in the family eat beef - that was about 1987. He wasn't sure but said it wasn't worth the risk and CJD was an awful way to die. Full vegetarian now though..

Although the government have been taking this seriously for a while. For instance I had heart surgery in 1986(requiring a transfusion) and this has banned me from giving blood my entire adult life.

Also the prion that causes the disease both in cows and humans only exists in cells of the cow and the CSF. As milk contains none of these dairy is actually very very safe. Also it mainly affected beef cattle as they were fed other cows as a source of winter protein to keep their weight up. Dairy cattle do much better on grass, haylidge or silidge so again more protection from dairy.

I wish people would actually do some research before creating false facts that the lesser educated on here actually believe.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37679015

The incubation period is dependant on genetic markers

Your either an

M M
V V
M V

The early cases recorded are M M gene types.

The incubation period M M isnt long, just a few years.

However, scientists having studied a Papa New Guinea tribe of cannibals who were showing similar symptoms, the researchers discovered that the incubation period in natives who had eaten the brains of dead relatives was between 30 and 50 years.

These people were tested and had the M V gene combo.

One of the guys in his 50s had eaten someone when he was 6 as part of the funeral ceremony.
He hadn't consumed people in the last 50 years but he has full blown illness.
It isn't called cjd but it is same.

Basically eating brains is bad, OK.

Crushing them up and feeding cows, cows brains, is bad.

There will be a second wave coming up over the next 20 years of people who were infected in the 80's.

They do not know if it can be transferred in other ways, eg in the blood donations, so anyone who has had blood given to them could also get someone else's dormant cjd.

That’s because it has nothing to do with cattle. “Mad cow” is a made up disease. It’s exposure to organophosphates(nerve agents) that cause nervous conditions. Ding dongsheep
