This is almost a GPS type development for the travel industry for those who travel overseas. It will have a HUGE IMPACT for traveling overseas and an equally HUGE IMPACT on the US Military when it sends soldiers and units overseas. It then takes their reply (again say in French or German) and translates that into English so you can HEAR what they said. Quoting: Midwest Skeptic The AUDIO translation device, which is about the size of any Olympus pocket recorder/transcriber (which I use at my office), and used about the same way, handles 43 different languages. I first talked about the concept of this kind of AUDIO Translator to friends back in the 1970's and fully expected it to be here by 2000, 2010 at the latest, but it has taken longer to develop than I first imagined. Depending upon the cost "I" will become an early adopter since I am terrible at foreign languages and struggle just to do simple phrases and requests when I travel overseas - not even counting the fact that I can't understand the replies of the locals at all. GREAT NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL MAKE FOREIGN TRAVEL MUCH EASIER!! Oh ... COST? $90!! I can see most US Military platoons on overseas deployment, maybe even individual soldiers, carrying this device with them - or a clone - in less than 3 years. Businessmen who travel overseas who are NOT fluent in the language of the country they are going to, will almost be required. (oh and thank you Godlike Productions ... this showed up on an ad that was attached to a video that was posted in the hurricane thread - otherwise I wouldn't know it existed even though I read the tech news stuff daily) [link to techgadgetstrends.com (secure)] And this can’t be an app because? The page linked is literally an ad.. |

Yep it could be an app ... but can your app work WITHOUT connection to a Cell Phone System and WITHOUT the Internet? That is NOT how apps on one's cell phones work these days ... everybody wants to collect the toll $$ for working through the cell phone network if they are designing an App. (why I still use a Garmin GPS for driving, NOT a cell phone App ... I am out of cell phone connection areas A LOT, and I use Verizon, which has the best rural coverage in the US) (seems in about 1/2 of the more out of the way places I am in Europe my cell phone does NOT work - though it does OK in the cities and along the major highways) I don't think you are going to find dependable cell phone connections in the mountains of Afghanistan, the jungles of the Congo, in parts of the US along the southern border areas, or in some of the neater places in Europe. You select the language and the person speaks that language into the phones microphone and it automatically translates it into english. It is also capable of pronouncing the words for you 5000 words at a time. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77765596 GREAT ... if your cell phone works in the foreign country you are visiting in the location you are when you NEED it to work AND the DATA CONNECTION is FAST. Obviously the translation software from a large mainframe will be better just because it's database and computing power is much more powerful than a self contained device ... but those programs REQUIRE a good AND FAST CELL PHONE DATA connection, and it is unlikely to work well, if at all, with just a G2 connection, which is all you can get in many areas even if you have a decent cell phone voice connection. (try Thailand ... G2 is OK in many places, G3 maybe, G4 iffy iffy iffy) Midwest Skeptic |

I thought Google wouldn't work through the Great Chinese Firewall ... My friends in China tell me they can't get to Google unless they use PVN's ... and those have to changed at least monthly, sometime weekly. What "visitor" is going to be able to do that with most VPN's blocked? Fwiw China is now about 1/2 of a internet traffic and a huge destination for international businessmen, particularly those involved with manufacturing. |
