Try a super concentrated extremely effective gas that traps heat. I am not a believer in global warming due to 'man made' issues expecially after the Michael Mann 'hockey stick' corrupt data he fed to the U.N. to alarm people back in the late 90's. Methane is the one gas we do not want flowing freely as it is from the atmosphere - unless you want things to get hotter and hotter. No idea what the solution is. Out of my pay scale. |

Maybe the Iranisn ships should go there ? Boom ,boom ..... Of all the people in the world that stand a chance in super high temps it is the middle eastern people. They are used to 110+ temps. Seriously though - as the stories explain - methane is natural and a super heater. Not freaking out but if something does not change then this alone will send earth temps higher and higher. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 40169223 United States 07/20/2019 07:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back when the earth was a snowball it was methane that started the heating of the globe to thaw out. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68884472 This is natural made global warming and nothing can be done about it. Definately pin worthy. Something has to be done about it, or we might die. In the distant past, large increases of carbon and other greenhouse gases in the planet's atmosphere over a short amount of time were followed by mass extinctions. In fact, I think we're already experiencing mass extinctions right now of many plant & animal species. Things aren't looking too good -- whether this is natural or man-made isn't the issue, it's happening and if we can do anything about it, we got to take action right now. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77743250 United States 07/20/2019 07:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Methane bubbles getting into the groundwater and exploding through the ground made the famous North Carolina bay lakes. The bubbles of explosive gas are all oriented the same way due to the Coriolis force From The Kid "The north west/south east orientation of the lakes could be due to the the west to east rotation of the Earth, commonly called the Coriolis Effect. The lake's fluids flow up from below and then onto the surface. Since the Earth is moving west to east, and the fluids are moving up the net effect is that the water moves in a south easterly direction. From another point of view, once the fluid has broken the surface it is no longer carried along with the dirt that formerly surrounded it. The Earth then rotates out from under the surface water, which results in the water flowing in the opposite direction. But since the ground around the lake is uneven and there are inertial effects from the Earth's rotation, the net direction of flow is south easterly. Therefore, the Coriolis Effect, together with the other constraints mentioned above, could account for the orientation of the lakes." Anybody want some Hythane or something, or would you like some new lakes? People do so like their shore front property. [link to www.treehugger.com (secure)] Or we could make food out of it [link to www.newscientist.com (secure)] In theory, carbon emissions could be greatly reduced by using methane from a renewable source, such as biogas from farm waste or landfill sites. This would reduce emissions to levels comparable to those for feeds made from wheat or soya, for instance. “Feeds that have lower carbon emissions, lower land use and lower water use are absolutely needed,” says Tom Cumberlege of the Carbon Trust, one of the authors of the report. The catch is that there are no big and cheap sources of biogas. “It’s just not going to happen,” says Shaw. The US factory will use natural gas from a conventional source, not from fracking. Or we could just get drunk and wait to blow up. First worlds last problems. |

Less than 50. or Start at 1:55 to skip all the intro stuff. There are methane seeps all over the world. There are several off the California coast. If you are worried about the environmental effects of naturally occurring methane seeps, that have been active for millions of years, there is an easy, practical solution... Drill Baby, Drill! Instead of allowing methane to seep into the air, wasting a valuable resource and increasing the greenhouse effect, capture it and put it to use. That way we have cheaper energy, and the very greenhouse active methane is turned into less greenhouse active CO2... Then plant trees to sequester the CO2. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77774578 United States 07/20/2019 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Permian History Methane Gas Explosion From Ocean Wiped Out 95% Of Life Major theory is that oceans can and have produced methane gas, and was responsible for the Permian Mass Extinction. This explosion killed up to 95% of life on earth during that period. A seafloor basin of methane saturated water may have a breaking point. An earthquake, underwater landslide, or even an meteor impact could have triggered this, and suddenly, like shaking a giant soda bottle, the deepest part of the ocean would have exploded in a deadly storm of methane bubbles. |
