Maximum Security Wins Haskell Stakes (DQd Derby Winner)
Maximum Security redeemed himself quite a bit but also will renew talks about the Kentucky Derby DQ. There was a weirdly similar incident to the Derby in this race. Maximum Security was #7 just as he was in the Derby when he had an incident mostly involving the #1 horse - which was the horse involved this time as well (different horse this time) and it happened right about the same point in the race.

The Derby was a gutty performance by Maximum Security. It was in the slop and he led pretty much the whole way, repelling every challenger.

Today it was extremely hot at Monmoluth Park. PETA was outside protesting racing in the heat. They ran 2 races then cancelled the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th races (non-Stakes races) while reschuduling the rest of the raaces starting at 6:00 PM when they thought it might get a bit cooler. Lots of horses scratched because of a 4 hour delay.

On race day a horse is medicated in the morning at a certain time so the medication will still be effective when they race. A 4 hour delay means some horses may not run. One horse scratched in the Haskell.

All in all it was another gutty performance by Maxiumum Security and I think he proved he really is the best 3 yeara old in the country. He lost his last race (first since the Derby DQ). He came in 2nd so he has only had 1 horse ever finish ahead of him in a race and he beat that horse today.

Baffert's Much Gusto finished 2nd. Baffert does great in this race so he was a legit horse, as is #1 King for a Day (the horse that beat MS).

There were tense moments for the team surrounding Maximum Security after Saturday's Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, watching as the “Inquiry” sign lit up on Monmouth Park's tote board. Gary and Mary West's talented sophomore colt had crossed the wire first, as he had in the Kentucky Derby, but an incident with King For A Day at the three-eighths pole was drawing the stewards' scrutiny.

King For A Day, who defeated Maximum Security last out in the Pegasus, crossed the wire in fifth.

It wasn't the 20-minute stress test that came following the Run for the Roses, however, as stewards quickly ruled that there would be no change to the official order of finish.

Maximum Security crossed the line a length ahead of Mucho Gusto to win the $1 million contest, scoring his second Grade 1 win of the season under jockey Luis Saez. The 4-5 favorite, trained by Jason Servis, completed nine furlongs over Monmouth's fast main track in 1:47.56.

The victory earns Maximum Security an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic this fall at Santa Anita Park.

I wonder what kind of horses we will get when they start engineering the dna in the sperm...jurassic park style.
