Fukushima - TEPCO to decomission undamaged Fukushima Daini nuclear station
Tokyo Electric Power plans to scrap its Fukushima Daini nuclear station, located a few miles south of the bigger Fukushima Daiichi plant where three
reactors melted down in 2011 after an earthquake and tsunami, Kyodo News reported on Wednesday.

Tomoaki Kobayakawa, president of Tepco, (9501.T) as the company is called, will visit the governor of Fukushima prefecture on Wednesday to convey the plan and
its board will formally approve the decision later this month, Kyodo said, without citing sources.

Three reactors at Fukushima Daiichi, which had six reactors and is located about 12 kilometers (7 miles) north of Fukushima Daini, suffered meltdowns after the
giant March 2011 earthquake and tsunami shut down the plant’s cooling systems.

The Daini station also came close to a disaster, but retained enough backup power to keep cooling going. Successive Fukushima governors have called for it to be scrapped.

Re: Fukushima - TEPCO to decomission undamaged Fukushima Daini nuclear station
My understanding is that Daiini had multiple partial meltdowns as well as cracks in the storage pools. It was smoking and in emergency at the same time Daiichi did, had a full blackout, and was repowered by a heroic effort to run new mainlines in from a neighboring prefecture. This was not possible at Daiichi due to the extensive tsunami damage to areterials cutting the site off from assistance efforts.

I heard that one of the reactors there had nearly a full meltdown, but only onto the base pad, and was "contained."

The others allegedly did not breach the RPV but had serious problems that made it infeasible to restart the reactors. I believe a couple of them were able to be repaired and returned to partial service.

All of these reactors were EOL at 40 years so no wonder they want to shut them down. Good excuse to mothball the site.

Japan has made every effort to bury this part of the disaster. The fact is, there were several more meltdowns than publicly stated and virtually every nuclear plant in Japan experienced serious problems as a result of the earthquakes. That's why all of them were shut down in the aftermath and remained so for over two years.

Also, I think it's funny they only admit to 3 meltdowns. All 6 at Daiichi melted down. 3 literally exploded and blew melted fuel everywhere. The 4th was in the process of being refueled, was severely structurally damaged, caught fire and burned into the air it's contents. 5 & 6 we're of newer design but suffered catastrophic failures that remained contained to the reactor buildings due to design improvements.

If the other 3 reactors were any good, they would have turned them back on already, just like Chernobyl.

Daini nuclear station,

Had an old navy nuke sub retiree as the operator during the disaster. He vented early saving the plant much to the dismay of the suits in Tokyo.

He was in the post three mile island operators classes and followed his gut.
