That is the minimum. We never activated, just did our regular training stuff. I don't think there is any benefits for National Guard that never went active.

Don't get me wrong, combat would be a short lived thing without support units. The thing is per DAV there are more support veterans on VA disability than actual combat vets.

Go figure.

I recently received an application for a young individual which was discharged medically. Honorably. However the rule on the books is one single day of active duty.

Once you are sworn in to the service. You may go down in a plane crash prior to serving your second 24 hours.

I don't make the rules up and do not have any authority to change them.

Just following the rules and trying to convey what I do know.

The VFW is the place to go if you are a real veteran and earned it. The American legion is for deployment dodgers. Fact

for all the negativity lets throw some facts out there.
Between WWI and WWII there is a 23 year gap from end of the first to the beginning of the second WW.

The end of the second WW to the beginning of Korea was only 4 yrs.

The end of the Korean war to Vietnam approximately a 6 year gap for peace.

End of Vietnam to beginning of Gulf War 15 year gap for peace time service.

Those are the only conflicts which the VFW recognizes for eligibility.

And remember the American Legion exist due to an act of congress. Unlike the VFW.

Which is why their membership is declining. If not for the Gulf War.

Vietnam ended in 1975 so a 20yr old would of been born in 1955 which would make them 65 years old. How many young people want to socialize with 65 yr olds unless it happens to be their grandparents.

For VA medical benefits under the Guard you would have to have some kind of service connected disability, Same as active duty so there is not distinction, unless you are a retiree would be the exception.

Educational Benefits went through many revisions. From free, Then the service member had to make payroll contributions for the benefit VEAP. It was finally reverted back to the free plan and not requiring contributions.

Finish your paperwork and sign up for classes, and depending on the educational institution, the financial aid office may be able to help you with the paperwork for your tuition assistance thru the VA.
