Well, Now They've Done It~ Full GMO Cannabis, and Damnable Open Door GMO Policies In Effect
Yes, companies have been working on GMO cannabis for at least a decade now. Some have successfully engineered GMO cannabis, but now, it's coming to a place near you.

Personally, I am sick and tired of people who think that it is a good idea to screw around with the very fabric of life itself.

Grrr.

And for those who have been believing that higher THC is GMO, this article can clear that up for you. Or I can do it in a nutshell.

Types of seed:

Heirloom: Been around for over 50 years and reproduces true to plants characterisitics from saved seed.

Open Pollinated: Same as above, but hasn't been around long enough to be considered fully stabilized and given the Heirloom apellation.

Hybrid: Combining two plants from the same type for particular traits. Seeds that are saved may produce fruits, but usually won't hold true to the traits of the parent plant. (Hint: this is a lot cannabis, but the seeds from the same types of parents generally produce offspring reflecting the same genetic expression.)

GMO: Genetically modified in a lab. Either gene edited, or having the genes from a totally different species fused into the genetic material of a plant that may look exactly like "corn", but is now infused with bacteria, or some other alien genes that would never manifest in reality. So, a tertiary substance.

Less than 50% by a long shot:

One of these transformation attempts happened in 2012. A research group led by Dr. Imane Wahby, PhD, used agrobacterium to introduce foreign genes into cannabis plant tissue, namely the roots. Although the foreign genes made it into the tissue’s DNA, the genes likely couldn’t pass on to offspring (a “transient transformation,” as Levy called it). That’s probably because cannabis evolved to maintain its internal genetics, and plants that can self-pollinate by becoming hermaphrodites (like weed) often circumvent attempts to fully transform them.

Trait’s water-soluble cannabis technology falls under two product lines, Trait Distilled and Trait Amplified. Trait Distilled focuses on crafting edible and drinkable products using the company’s water-soluble cannabinoids. Trait Amplified refers to the GM plants themselves.

Trait has more product lines, too. Trait Defense uses biotechnological methods to protect its cannabis from viruses, bacteria, and molds. Trait Tailored offers customized cannabis that produces specific cannabinoids levels or ratios, e.g. plants that always crank out 30 percent THC, or weed that always balances a 1-to-1 THC-to-CBD ratio. And the company’s Trait Zero line promises hemp plants that never produce THC, period.

Levy credits the success of Trait’s GM plants to Dr. Richard Sayre, the company’s Chief Science Officer. You’ve probably never heard of Sayre, but within the agricultural science community, the guy is a legend. Much of his groundbreaking work focused on harnessing electricity from algae, but now Dr. Sayre has brought his biotechnological prowess to the cannabis scene.

Sayre “realized when the plant synthesizes cannabinoids, there’s a toxic element to it,” Levy continued. “There’s a reason why they’re only synthesized in the bud and stored in the trichomes. Production of cannabinoids is toxic to the plant.” Normally, cannabis produces the bulk of its cannabinoids and terpenes in the bud’s trichomes, which are oily sacs that grow along and inside of the flowers. This is because both cannabinoids and terpenes are naturally fat-soluble, meaning they dissolve in fats or oils. If these fat-soluble cannabinoids and terpenes were made in the plant’s stems, leaves, etc., it could compromise the plant’s health by affecting its ability to absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, or transpire water — the plant version of sweating.

This is really a huge deal.

When Starlink corn came out, and was supposed to be "controlled", the genetic aberration from it showed in wild corn in Mexico. More than 700 miles from the test plots.

GMO plants are truly Pandora's Box. Both for plants, and those who consume them.

Late night bump...Hoping some intelligent people that give a bit of care about what we do to destroy ourselves might take a look.

Bump to reply tomorrow since we grow landrace seeds from around the world. But I'm getting tired. To make it simple landrace (either sativa, indica or ruderalis) are hard to cross with anything. But that is not a chatter for tonight.

Maybe it is different in the US, but most medpot in Canada is grown from clones taken off a mother plant. There is no viable way of spreading the GMO cannabis unless it is released via pure hemp growing. Even then, every decent grow room would be immune from pollen due to the fact that you really do need a proper HEPA filter in your grow room. This was issue in our Kootenays when they started growing industrial hemp. The outdoor growers got pissed off.

The indoor growers were already immune from pollen drift because of their filtration and any plant that may have gotten some pollen from clothing or hair or whatever, only would produce a few seeds which were trimmed out anyhow. I understand that in Cali and other places a lot is grown outdoors. It might be best to move those grows into semisterile greenhouses.

The nature of med pot is to not allow your female plants access to pollination. When we did more breeding, we kept our males that were selected very far away and hand harvested the pollen as the growers around me do still. The males are kept somewhere where the wind has no possibility of randomly blowing the pollen off.

So keeping that in mind. It is very hard for a GMO medical cannabis strain to spread, it's just not the way the industry work. In fact, strains are highly guarded, they are worth a lot of money. We were offered 100k for our 'Roberts Creek Congo' because it is actually a landrace, short flowering (9-13 weeks depending on what you are looking for) sativa bred for millenia by the pygmies of the Congo region for example.

We ended up just giving it away to people instead. It's a good plant and people are making crosses with it.

People get confused and think that hemp is not pot. It is, they are just different cultivars of the same species. Indica, sativa or ruderalis...ruderalis is only used in breeding because it is a northern plant and it auto-flowers really early. Which, if you are an indoor grower or simply a more northern grower is desirable. So I can't see how the introduction of GMO cannabis can really spread.

But then again, I know nothing about the Southern US and their growing styles. But most growers cull their males here pretty quickly if your crop is raised from seed. I do know a few new hemp farmers down SOuth and I'll see if they will chime in on this!
Cheerio!

It would have to be cuttings. We are not actively breeding at present.
