[link to www.bbc.co.uk (secure)] Heavy rain is expected to hamper efforts to fix a damaged dam at risk of bursting - after more residents nearby were evacuated. Work to lower Toddbrook Reservoir's water level by pumping continued overnight at Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. It has dropped by 1.3m (4ft 3ins) since Thursday, but forecasters have said 30-40mm (1.2-1.6in) of rain could fall in just two hours on Sunday. A further 55 homes were evacuated on Saturday. Some 1,500 people in the town had already sought shelter elsewhere after part of the reservoir's spillway broke away. Police said the "risk of adverse weather" was to blame for the most recent evacuations, as well as the risk of the reservoir breaching. Derbyshire's deputy chief fire officer, Gavin Tomlinson, said crews were working to get "ahead of the curve" and "minimise the impact of any bad weather that does materialise". |

At least she has her sisters place and then after finding out who owns it the Trust is kind of responsible. It won't replace family heirlooms and stuff like that and the things they liked to look at might be gone but at least they should not be homeless. Emergency workers are continuing their efforts to prevent Toodbrook Reseroir dam giving way after it was badly damaged following last week's torrential weather. There remains a threat to life in the town and 55 further properties were cleared in the Horwich End area on Saturday - on top of around 1,500 residents who had already been evacuated. Water levels at the Toddbrook Reservoir in the town have been reduced by 1.3 metres since Thursday, the Department for the Environment said, but police warned the 180-year-old structure remained in a "critical condition" with a breach still a "very real threat". Forecasters warned of the potential for up to 40mm of rain to fall in just an hour or two on Sunday afternoon. A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place for much of northern England and the Midlands, including the area around the reservoir. |

Firefighters said 22 high-capacity pumps were working around the clock to suck water out of the 180-year-old Toddbrook Reservoir to ease pressure on the dam, which was damaged when part of a spillway gave way in heavy rain last week. To repair a gaping hole, a Royal Air Force helicopter dropped one-ton bags of sand and gravel into the chasm. Workers on the ground joined the bags with concrete grouting. Six rescue boats were deployed around Whaley Bridge, a town 175 miles (280 kilometers) northwest of London, in case the dam bursts. Britain's meteorological agency said "torrential downpours and hail" could bring 40 millimeters (1.6 inches) of rain in one to two hours Sunday night. By late Sunday afternoon, police said the pumps, which remove water at a rate of around 10 centimeters (3.94 inches) an hour, had lowered the reservoir by about three meters (9.8 feet). "This work will continue until engineers are confident that the water is at a safe level and the risk has been mitigated," Derbyshire Deputy Fire Chief Gavin Tomlinson said. "Our priority remains the same: to pump as much water out of the reservoir as possible, to protect the Whaley Bridge community from the risk of the dam failing." About 1,500 residents of Whaley Bridge were evacuated after the spillway broke Thursday. |
