Kemper Crabb created an album called The Vigil (1982l and it's about being a Christian knight who takes a ritual abultion to purify himself of sin and pray for forgiveness and lead a devout life as a soldier for Christ. It was highly influential and even rock musicians listen to and were inspired.

During the late sixties and early seventies, there was a movement across many denominations to create a simple sort of song, sung in rounds, to try to create a sense of holiness emuating then heavenly chorus as found in the book of Revelation. Hymn singers and hippies with the Jesus Movement and seekers interested in discovering Christianity and rock musicians and Cursillo and Road to Emmaus folks and the Taize Community were trying to "pray without ceasing".

Here is one type of song from that period of acoustic music rather than organ or piano. This lead to guitars being part of services and overhead projectors so people would be looking up and make a new song full of joy unto the Lord.

Far later this lead to Christian Rock and Vineyard Music.

Seek Ye First was one of those songs and since so many of us were passionate about our love for Jesus, instead of arguing about theology, the music and our devotion to Christ and ministry, then bound us together.

Rock musicians took notice and tried incorporating their flirtation with Christianity. This was largely unheard of. And groups like Kansas and Head East that were mainstream risks their careers by these song. Yet it touched a chord resonating with so many of us rejecting the dead churches that had become boring clubs instead of places to passionately believe together.

Anything Switchfoot! Grew up in SoCal surfing and have met the band a few at the beach! Real down to earth people.

In the late seventies, some of us tried to recapture what Galatians 3 means for Christians to be "of the seed of Abraham" and so some music and l_rics had a Hebrew sound and trying to insert that in Christian praise music.

All Christian Praise music was trying to lift out passages directly from the Bible and put it to song.

In 1977, Kansas is singing Portrait He Knew which is clearly about Jesus, and by then they were irrevocably already transitioning into the first mainstream rock band to become a Christian rock band.

People did not know what to think about that.
