I have several friends who’ve lived and worked in HK for years. Some even own homes there in the outrageously expensive RE market. Most of them are bailing out now. The big corporate employees of US corporations and most German and UK Companies (including Siemens and Mercedes Benz and BMW) are pulling their employees and their families out of there even if it means private jets and armed guards to get them to the airport. There are plenty of private copters landing on pads atop big buildings and whisking their passengers to waiting boats offshore just to get them out of harms way before the full invasion takes place. My phone has been ringing a lot these past couple of days. Many residents of HK have their own Sat Phones and the Chinese Government cannot stop them making outbound calls over those phones. However the communication channels are going to be interrupted if there is a wholesale invasion of communist troops as the Chinese government will not want the world to witness the killings of their own citizens and of citizens of US or EU countries who happen to live or work in Hong Kong and who have not been evacuated by their employers as yet.

It is believed that most Americans will not be harmed, but the chances of being collateral damage are, of course, great. When you have hundreds of armed Chinese troops who are often young enough that they still have acne and cannot yet grow even a semblance of a beard and they’re turned loose with automatic weapons on a civilian population (Remember Tieamenn Square!) the results may be the deaths = accidental or otherwise - of untold US and EU Citizens.

The American and EU Expat Communities in HK are being decimated by the wholesale evacuation of all US and EU employees one way (legally if possible) or another (private copters taking them from corporate towers to waiting boats off shore and well into international waters and outside the most ambitious claim of Chinese Territorial rights. The private plane terminal at the air port in HK has not yet been shut down by the Communist Government but they expect it to be seized and closed soon. Most commercial flights into HongKong have been cancelled already and the ones that are in flight now, may have to be diverted to other nearby but outside of communist countries, airports.

Scary times and most of us knew these grabs for the billions that have been invested in Hong Kong by the US and EU corporate interest over the years would happen, sooner or later. Many are surprised they waited this long. But if you’re in Hong Kong contact your corporate offices and make sure there is an exit plan in place for you, your co-workers and your family if they’re with you in HK. And for all of the Expats living in HK today - God watch over each and every one of you!
