In HK today is day of general strike. It's 1AM now, most protesters are already home. If Chinese do something today, it'll be probably at night I guess.

But more probably it will not happen tonight IMO.

They need to control sea access. Macau is only a quick boat ride away. All the huge trade to the Pearl River Delta is a few miles away as well and they don't want to disrupt that.

Too bad they don't have any right to guns there. But sure, guns are evil and we should erode our 2nd every chance we get.

We can send a naval task force through there bristling with weapons of all kinds and including nuclear submarines. And then what? Push come to shove we cannot land in Hong Kong nor invade China nor repel the Chicoms. The end result would make us look weak. How long could we sit there before the Chinese attack us? What then?

Imagine the stupidity if Nixon had opened trade with the USSR as he did with the Chinese. You folks in Eastern Europe would be under the Iron Curtain still. The USSR would still exist. East Germany would still exist.
