Re: Millions of butterflies flying to Scotland in 'once-in-a-decade' phenomenon
The UK could be experiencing a once-in-a-decade wildlife phenomenon this year with a mass influx of painted lady butterflies, experts have said.

TV naturalist Chris Packham is urging people to take part in the world's largest insect citizen science survey, the annual Big Butterfly Count, to see if the painted ladies are arriving in their millions to the UK's shores this year.

The painted lady butterfly is a common immigrant from the continent to the UK each summer where its caterpillars feed on thistles (you can see why they're heading to Scotland) but around once every 10 years there is a painted lady "summer" when millions arrive en masse.

This summer is set to be just that rare summer as the wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation, which runs the Big Butterfly Count, said unusually high numbers have been reported across Europe over the spring and early summer with large numbers now spotted crossing to the UK

If Millions of butterflies took to the air at the same time this would be a sign. Maybe for those believing it is a sign TO GET TO HIGHER GROUND? "Up here" type of thing? Scotland is well above sea level. Heads up.

I read the linked article looking for it to be 11-12yr cycle vs the 10yr cycle claimed in the title. Yes it is indeed right in our faces. 2008 was the last year this happened. 11yrs.

Solar cycle is 11-12yrs. How can folks not see this cycle. It is everywhere I look. Fractals. MAGA

Seen one of these in my backyard the other day. First time in a few years.

They are called the Diana Fritillary Butterfly. And they are fairly large, about the size of a monarch.

They feed on thistle pollen...

Order of the Thistle:

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry associated with Scotland. The current version of the Order was founded in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (James II of England and Ireland) who asserted that he was reviving an earlier Order. The Order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies, as well as certain "extra" knights (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs). The Sovereign alone grants membership of the Order; he or she is not advised by the Government, as occurs with most other Orders.

What drives this butterfly cycle sweetheart? Solar Sunspot Cycle is 11-12yrs. We are currently at the Solar Minimum between Solar Cycle 24 and Solar Cycle 25.

2008 was the minimum of cycle 23. If you read the article you will read that the last time this butterfly event took place was 2008. Solar Minimums are cool wet years, perfect for the weeds butterfly larvae(caterpillers) feed on. MAGA

Re: Millions of butterflies flying to Scotland in 'once-in-a-decade' phenomenon
For years I have looked after hibernating butterflies. Usually Tortoishells and Commas.

They start to come indoors to sleep around mid august-mid September. As I discover them I scoop them up and they go in the box with the rest I find.

Some of them hibernate too early so they get a feed of honey water if they wake up November.,ish. I check them once a month, feed the half awake ones and, weather depending, evict them in April.

I love seeing them leave on a sunny spring day knowing I helped feed and care for them over the winter months.
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

the beauty of nature, amazing.

So happy for my Scottish friends here hf

Butterflies are my favorite part of summer and I'm in the MidAtlantic States and have seen more butterflies this summer than ever. I am so happy because they are happy. The Monarch was actually the first to show up a few months ago; usually they are later in the season. Crazy.

I planted a second butterfly bush, Black Knight, plus more flowers to attract them.

Each year is different as gardeners know. I feel blessed.
