In December 1983, I was killed in a car wreck. I was a vegetable. Here is the definition of that condition:

A persistent vegetative state (PVS) or post-coma unresponsiveness[1] (PCU) is a disorder of consciousness in which patients with severe brain damage are in a state of partial arousal rather than true awareness. After four weeks in a vegetative state (VS), the patient is classified as being in a persistent vegetative state. This diagnosis is classified as a permanent vegetative state some months (three in the US and six in the UK) after a non-traumatic brain injury or one year after a traumatic injury. The term unresponsive wakefulness syndrome may be alternatively used,[2] as "vegetative state" has some negative connotations among the public.[3]

After I came out of the coma, I was unable to respond though I heard and saw everything. I even remember my own thoughts when the Dr. Told me I was brain damaged and possibly a veg the rest of my life. Long story short, it took over 7'years of rehabilitation to over come most of the effects from that incident. What Bruce Willis has, I have had most of my life. Lol, I can't think of the name of that, but you know what I'm talking about. I also have short term memory loss my whole life. I do not handle stress, my whole life. I am not unique, but surviving and over coming a traumatic brain injury changed my life and made my life. Each decade marks a milestone as does for anyone. Again, I don't feel special for that experience but it does give me knowledge one not having suffered the same or something similar will not have.

I was very hard on myself in first years of recovery and then on the other side, I literally would spend years not even recalling the incident. I would be in a bout of PTSD for years sometimes before I was able to identify what the fuk was wrong with me?


It did not change me it only changed my life. It made me more compassionate for others and less self centered. It made me quite aware of other things in the Universe and around the Universe, such as all the layers etc of energy and other beings and creatures. It makes me more prone to depression but I had that mastered already before the injury.


Now, I would have to say, as with anyone living as long as I, I definitely have slowed down. Arthritis is an effect of such an injury and rest is my best friend for healing and over coming the symptoms of stiffness and soreness.


Loud noises large crowds yelling and such are not my friends. Those things are not good for anyone who has suffered traumatic injury.


But regardless, I have put myself smack dsb in the middle of such situations thinking I can handle it, a d I do until I don't.

Today I ordered Pizza for the Kiddos and I am eating Beef Stew, but The Pizza's are right next to me and I can smell them ....

Quit it. I really need some whole food. Trying to figure out how I can get some carbs in with no kitchen otherwise I would have a pan of lasagna .. or some such thing for a winter dish. Stuck in the parking lot still waiting for a friend to get done gathering some needed supplies.

Wow Rewind-- that's quite a journey. To recover from that and even being able to post stuff is amazing. I can't imagine what type if depression that must have caused as you were able to see and cogitate all going around you, but not able to communicate. I know for sure, I wouldn't have been able to pull off what you did.

What did the Drs. say about the percentage of people with a severe brain injury make a recovery like yours?

So glad you're here with us, and your short term memory seems to be pretty darn good.

I'm also happy that your faith helped give you the strength and courage to fight an uphill battle for so many years. You're a strong woman.
