No Roads, No Cars, Just Boats
Most of us town-and-city dwellers spend our days pounding hard, paved ground. But in Giethoorn, Holland, residents float through canals. Built without roads, a series of waterways and bridges connect the town’s 2,400 residents. This incredible aquatic infrastructure has even earned the town the nickname “Little Venice.

You can do that sort of thing in flat country, not so good in hilly terrain unless you like log flume rides a lot.

FWIW, large parts of the UK have extensive canal networks as well.

Not an activity for the time obsessed. chuckle

I stumbled on to some details of canal transport as a primary means of travel while investigating various peoples solar energy setups because as it happens the UK has a fairly good sized population of what they call narrow boaters- people who primarily live on the canals and avoid using fuels to a great extent.
Life on the canals is pretty interesting stuff in its own right and the people who live it are indeed pretty laid back out of necessity if for no other reason.
