Thing that makes most sense to me is that he isn't dead and this is part of his plea deal (fake death) to get a new life.

Maybe the 1st time he was supposed to have attempted suicide he was actually supposed to be freed then but something went wrong with the deal or the deal needed changing?

Then once all that was ironed out the second 'suicide attempt' was successful, he gets out of the prison and off to his new life?

I mean everyone knew a lot of people wanted him dead and to risk killing him in prion is madness and tough to get away with.

If he was killed by someone paid off in the prison then look out for someone else from the prison committing 'suicide' in the coming days, inmate, guard, janitor etc, as they will know too much and also need to dealt with.
