It has mountains 20 miles inland with marshy areas along the coast. Floods are likely a very common occurrence in the area.
The overcrowding of India may not be as bad as Bangladesh, but it is bad. People live in areas that they should not even think of living of living on.
The worst flooding in 40 years? As they have twice as many people as back then, this really does not look too bad.
Too bad for those stuck there, for sure. It is not easy getting a 7-11.

Compare that to just 30 years ago or 60 years. - In a similar light, look at the global population of, say, 60 years ago and compare that to today. Populating a region is a first come, first served deal. So the best spots got snatched up ages ago. As the population grows, people are forced to inhabit the less desirable areas...i.e. prone to flooding, prone to wildfires, prone to this or that Think about it. I am not excluding the possibility of some sort of weather phenomena and/or change in climate from being a factor, but it's certainly not the only factor.
