It has mountains 20 miles inland with marshy areas along the coast. Floods are likely a very common occurrence in the area.
The overcrowding of India may not be as bad as Bangladesh, but it is bad. People live in areas that they should not even think of living of living on.
The worst flooding in 40 years? As they have twice as many people as back then, this really does not look too bad.
Too bad for those stuck there, for sure. It is not easy getting a 7-11.

The point is are they actually record setting or just news headlines. There was a flood in India in 1943 that killed between 5,000-10,000 and dozens of floods since that have killed thousands, yet every one now is tagged as the worst ever.
