Anonymous Coward User ID: 75933984 New Zealand 08/20/2019 10:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I thought Trump's tariffs were supposed to bring manufacturing back to America? Especially heavy industries. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73174730 It would take years for that to happen, even a decade. You don't just build a manufacturing plant, tool it up and make it happen in 2 years time. The only uptick would be existing manufacturing adding shifts and that we have seen. At least here in Michigan. Exactly. God has a plan. And Trump is his man to carry out this plan. So either get behind God, support Trump or |

Quoting: Math 69893862 That’s less than 1% of the work force. Companies that size make adjustments all the time in employment numbers. So, what was the purpose of the Chinese tariffs then? Trump said that it was to bring manufacturing and heavy industry back to America. Another fucking lie? Labor is too costly here now. Labor can never really come back. We are fucked as a nation and nobody can see it. What region of the US do you live in? No real matter... I may be able to point something out you overlook every day. In times when labor was expensive, look at bridge built then. They are mostly steel. When labor was cheap, they made bridges nice ornate concrete rails and decorative curbs. I am not talking about MAJOR bridges, just some that may only be 25-30 feet on a highway you drive over every day. So, what were the fucking tariffs for? To collapse the U.S. economy? I can't defend his policy, His objective to bring more jobs to the US is the correct one but he would have been better off making it dirt simple and cheap to manufacture something here in the US once again rather than play the trade game he is doing right now. But the leftest would have killed ANY effort to make it cheap and easy to do business in the US. Fair share Bottom line, we as a nation are poorly equipped to fit a trade war with China. We lack the education on the economics of it, the impact, the importance and because our leaderhsip changes so frequently, we lack the staying power for any trade policy favorable to the US to have any teeth. |

US Steel is also actively hiring new employees. The responsibility now falls on the individual to increase their education and/or training to make them less expendable. Or.... Move to a different area and work for them still. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76103257 Canada 08/21/2019 12:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The lay-offs call into question claims President Donald Trump has made about the resurgence of the domestic steel industry. Last week in Pennsylvania, Trump said his 25% tariff on foreign imports has turned a "dead" business into a "thriving" enterprise. Domestic steel prices did rise in the immediate aftermath of Trump's tariffs. But they have fallen dramatically amid improved supplies and weakening demand from the auto and farm machinery sectors. Prices of hot-rolled coil are down nearly 37% from their 2018 peak. U.S. Steel's stock price has plunged 73% since March 1, 2018, when Trump announced his decision to crack down on foreign imports. ---- Winning |

You just bite into to anything to try and say SEE! Trump’s the devil! It’s retarded. The headline says hundreds, but if you read the article it says less than 200 will be temporarily laid off for 6 months. This is happening everywhere. Because when policy changes, there is a period where things adjust. Trump is an egotistical prick, but his policy with tariffs is not wrong. China has been fucking us for years. Unbalanced trade and they know it. It’s why they’re freaking out. The Chinese economy is a lot more fragile than the United states’. Your partisan bullshit is sickening. GLP was better when all of you crazy assholes weren’t on here. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 74528399 United States 08/21/2019 02:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No. Companies just moved factories from China to Taiwan and Philippines. So, what EXACTLY is Trump's plan to bring back manufacturing and heavy industry to America? What has been the benefit of tariffs at all? Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, etc. etc. None of these people have any plan. They don't have any way to save us, or save the U.S. economy. It's a fucking shell game. The impetus is on us, the citizens, to bring back manufacturing. Start profitable businesses, pay living wages, and keep our communities prosperous and intact. U.S. corporations are mostly private equity, debt whores. The money is in leveraging the equity, then taking said equity and putting it in the pockets of the "managers", as management fees, and "bonuses". They're all in on it. Left, right, it doesn't matter. Once the equity and wealth of the companies are gone, it just becomes a race to the bottom. Service debt, get behind on payments, restructure the debt, service debt, get behind on payments, restructure, etc. etc. until Chapter 11, and the company gets picked up by another firm. The money, for the executives, is not in the company making a profit. The money comes from leveraging the company until it collapses. This is why there is no living wage paid to those who are working for these huge conglomerates. The companies are operating at a loss. This is also why there is no manufacturing, and no "plan" to bring back manufacturing. Because these fucking scumbags don't give a fuck about you or anyone else. I say again: The impetus is on us, the citizens, to bring back manufacturing. Start profitable businesses, pay living wages, and keep our communities prosperous and intact. Instead, everyone is on meth and heroin, the communities are failing, Main Street is just a place where junkies overdose and piss/shit on the sidewalk. Here we are worshiping these piece of shit politicians like they have some answer. Grow up. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77710840 United States 08/21/2019 03:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Actually here is the skivvy from a scrapper who fallows what going in steel. 1) right before the tariffs came in the Chinese loaded massive container ships to bear with nothing but steel to beat the tariffs so we got a fuck ton of steel 2) the summer is when many mills close down to clean their forges this is normal #2 usually courses them to stockpile steel and demand drops so the price drop add #1 to #2 and you have a lot of steel and the prices drop even more the scrap prices in some area went as low as $45 a ton for steel, prices higher in other areas like $80 a ton was the bottom. Prices have recently been on their way up to over $100/120 a ton. Keep in mind the yards pay a lot less then they get from the forges the prices are going back up on steel. This make zero fucking sense for this to happen now... Maybe when it hit rock bottom it would make sense but when its the market recovering this suspicious as fuck. Note where this forge is located a Deep Democrat strong hold. Now what will happen if this forge closes? #1 bad Pr for trump #2 the demand for steel will drop again #3 the price of steel may fall again now someone going to lose as hit ton of money. But Democrats will do anything to push trump out. Their not firing but laying workers off so they get unemployment.. again more bad Pr for trumps numbers. More fodder for the sky is falling the recession is near fear mongering to try and create a depression with the press. A lot of what makes has nothing to do with real numbers it has to do wit consumer confidence. Things like feeling safe that their job will still be there. Such fears can lead to weak holiday sales numbers which will result stock price dropping which will result in people puling their money out of things and low spending over fears snowballing us into a recession that they want they already said it with trumps economy there is no way any democrat can win. Their openly Praying for a recession seems their working pretty had at artificially creating a recession, to blame and defeat trump seems to be their endgame |
