Which is better: try to continue when you're stuck in a ditch and just spinning your tires, or start over and possibly get somewhere?

You're over thinking it. Let me put it another way.

Once my truck was stuck. When I hit the gas, I just spun my tires going nowhere. I wanted to go forward, but I was just spinning my wheels.

I put the truck in reverse and backed up a little bit out of the rut. The ground behind me had slightly better traction, and using that traction I was able to plow forward over the rut and back onto drivable ground.

I wanted to go forward. But to do that, I had to go back. I technically had to lose a little ground to get where I needed. That is the idea I was talking about with "starting over." Sometimes, you have to go back and get a fresh start to not only get out of the rut, but get past it.

No trucks were abandoned in the making of this metaphor.

Continue, yet shift perspectives.
Basically, alter your outlook on your actions. Change the manner in which you judge the outcome.

Obviously you seem to be projecting an intractable loop; as the definition of any word I have used is not a defined loop or subset thereof.

I asked a simple question with no intimation towards any specific path or repeatability.

That is solely a function of perspective.

Anyway...no need to engage in word association for the sake of it.
