Actually the money to fuel the growth of industry in Switzerland came from those extremely low cost funds and ready availability of those funds to Swiss businesses over many decades that Swiss banks could provide.

Swiss banks, for their numbered accounts, did NOT pay interest and in many years CHARGED the depositors for keeping their money there ... VOILA super lost cost funds for the Banks that they could then "Lend Out" to local borrowers or favored borrowers at more favorable rates than available ANYWHERE ELSE in the developed world.

Swiss Banking, and it's LOW interest to favored local businesses was the fuel that allowed the rest of the industrialized and big business part of the Swiss Economy to grow.

Finally along comes the US which BREAKS Swiss bank secrecy ... and those HUGE amounts of NO interest deposits, or towards the end depositors PAYING the bank to keep their huge deposits there LEFT. Yep ... those low cost funds for Swiss Banks to lend out DISAPPEARED!!

Swiss banks then had no competitive advantage over any other major bank in the world wrt their cost of funds ... AND after decades of being "coddled" on that issue were not as efficient as many of their international competitors.

Most people greatly underestimate the long term impact of the competitive advantage the Swiss banks had with their super low cost of funds (which lasted for decades) both for the banks themselves and to the greater Swiss Economy.

The "gravy train" is over with. It is not surprising that much of the Swiss banking industry is in trouble, and over time (2 to 3 decades) that will spread to the greater economy.
