The Koch's have been a HUGE influence in my hometown FOREVER! There are several buildings [and a couple of hospital wings] named after both David and Charles around town due to philanthropic endowments that usually had a few strings attached. David and Charles both live[d] here in Wichita and have long been considered to be our "favorite sons" - but neither are really the best that family had to offer.

That honor should be reserved for the "silenced" brothers Bill and Frederick who were both ousted from the family business in 1981 and were quietly forced to sell their stock interests [worth about $800 million] to brothers Charles and David. Starting in 1983, legal wranglings went on for some 20 years as they charged that Chucky and Dave were pumping oil from federal land and Indian reservations.

It should also be mentioned that Bill and Frederick have always been far LESS concerned with manipulating politics to suit their own interests than their two greedy brothers.

Bill brought alot of local pride to Wichita when his yacht [the "Jayhawk"] won the World's Cup in 1992 and then brought the boat home, perching it high for all to share next to the Little Arkansas River downtown [I still remember seeing Bill on the news clambering all over the decks with bunches of laughing kids; in contrast, Chuck & Dave would've been sitting on the balcony sipping Dom Perignon!]. The yacht's still there in front of the Wichita Boathouse -the original building built in the 1920's that Bill bought, moved and restored then donated to the city. That classy old structure is now a popular venue for weddings and special events.

As for Frederick? He was the black Sheep of the family due to his "sensitivity" and interest in the arts; he openly rejected a lifetime of corporate corruption and instead dedicated himself to a better world. Fred is also well-known for being the "cheapest" of the four...in spite of his wealth and incredible collection of artwork and priceless manuscripts he lives a pretty low-key lfiestyle.

It's no wonder he -and Bill- have been unwelcome at family gatherings for decades!

Of those four brothers, Bill and Fred have always possessed alot more integrity and class than their two siblings; but David did contribute to both Democrats and Republicans -and considered Obama to be a pretty wretched President- so at least there's that!

Interestingly, all four brothers suffer from Prostate Cancer and that's what killed David. It was actually his diagnosis 27 years ago that spurred him to begin donating to medical research as he sought a treatment for his own condition... as I said above, there were always strings attached when you did business with him. But even his billion bucks couldn't save him in the end!

One final thing: my neice worked for several years at the Koch Industries local HQ and said while they were very big on employee perks like corporate picnics and such... they were also incredibly invasive and sought to control their workers every chance they got.

There's those pesky STRINGS again!
