Same...except my dad actually made a paddle, less bruising that way. In fifth grade they enrolled me in a cult where the abuse ratcheted up. The wood shop teacher actually made the winner, it wasn't wood though, it was one inch thick plexiglass with holes drilled through the entire length. You could hear the air swish through it on the forward stroke just before the sting hit your arse.

My mother was harder on us than our dad, she would let us go out and pick a switch off a tree and no matter what you picked she found a way for it to sting like a dozen yellow jackets.

Also, depends on the child.
Some don't respond well to it and will require alternate means of correction. A person must learn that there are negative consequences for their negative actions.
I raised four boys... spanked every one of them.
They have grown up to be fine young men.
