My Mother used to beat on me with a belt, and it made me very prone to fistfights.

I have overwhelming fear of being physically dominated/abused now, so I can be fast to react if I feel threatened by someone. Some call it a "short fuse", but it's not.

Depends on how hard and on why. If done for a trivial reason and excessively, then, yes, that is abuse. But done for a serious reason for a kid who's stubborn and won't respond to anything else, then it may be what's called for. I know some kids who laugh at the parents when they spank them. That laughter dissipates quickly when followed up by a belt.

If it leaves more than just some temporary red marks, then it's abuse.

Usually it's just an excuse for why you're so fucked up. Every one who has mental or emotional issues likes to blame the parents, because then they can play the victim rather than take ownership for their own part in it. Lots of people who receive corporal punishment turn out the better for it.

At one time getting a spanking was the normal way to discipline. Kids expected that if they continued not behaving... A spanking was coming.
