Whatever. Cry me a river OP. I got the belt until I was old enough to jump over the swing. Kids need the fear of consequences. Some just don’t get it from words and positive reenforcement. One drawback for me was I didn’t communicate with my parents as much as I should. Instead I hid my bad behaviors. So it’s not perfect. Also their really are some sick fucks out there who like abusing others.
I have never been violent. I don’t spank of use the belt on my kids now. I can see the difference. They don’t have any fear. They always make the same poor choices. I feel impotent to raise them properly and it’s largely because of pussies like you who cry about everything and feel the need to interject yourself in other peoples lives. Society is turning to shit and it’s because you have tied parents hands behind their back.

I only got the belt across the ass when I did something very very stupid that would have caused bodily injury to myself or someone else or severe financial harm to the family or somebody else.

Swearing or rebellious sassing attitude was hot sauce or soap in the mouth.

On the other side, if I was respectful, responsible, volunteered for civil duties, voluntarily helped in household chores or duties, studied, was cooperative and obedient, I was rewarded with privilege, respect and financial support.

Any kind of corporal punishment is a "nuclear option". Meaning only for use for the severest offenses* or insubordination(extreme refusal to accept lesser punishments).

The best all around punishment is "time out", standing against a wall. It helps to teach some measure of self control, and as long as not taken to extreme, has the least chance of causing emotional trauma(do not force children to stand in time out in a dark or scary place, and any sentence should not be more then 1 1/2 minutes per year of life).

If a child makes a mess, the punishment should be to clean it up. Also, prior to any punishment, there needs to be an impromptu legal hearing, to give the accused a chance to explain/defend themselves. This teaches them proper civil obedience, and what is acceptable. Abusive authority, only teaches children to rebel against authority.

Any corporal punishment, should only be done only when the one doing it is emotionally leveled out and not influenced by anger. Even then, the one doing it should strike their own knuckles/soft spot of their own body first, to gauge pain levels, so there is reduced risk of over doing it.

*Deliberately or maliciously harming other children, elderly, pregnant women, or animals. Destruction of property, does not warrant this type of action.

My dad boxed golden gloves and was in WW2 also. My brother and I got beat pretty much every day. Pop liked to karate chop us in the back of the neck because that made our entire body go limp and fall to the ground. My brother got a 2 x 4 broke over his back once, pop zapped him with live electrical wires, and his beatings stopped when he was 17 and was naked in the bathroom. Pop walked in and said "where in the hell did you get all those welts on your back?". My brother said "you did it dad". The beatings were routine, they sucked and made life horrible, but worst of all was taking a punch to the face. That made me feel unloved.

That's pretty much how my parents did it. But some people in this thread seem to have suffered a lot. Sorry to hear some of these stories.

In other words if they do something which inflicts pain on another intentionally or endangers their life or someone else's, and extra attention getter is in order and inflicting pain on them is an acceptable punishment.
