Think it was hurrican Beulah. The storm was supposed to come in high class 1 or low wind class 2, but strengthened an hour before landfall to 180mph, iirc. Quoting: Lester 14738527 There were partiers drinking out on the CCYC pier, quite a few; none were ever seen again... We were headed to the Rio Grande Valley to shoot Whitewings over Labor Day. Saw much devastation inland around Robstown. Remember seeing a straw blown all the way through a tree trunk. This is Peak Hurricane Season. Early season storms usually no big deal, and very rare for one after mid-Oct, but mid-Aug to late Sept are the killers... Being stuck on the road somewhere in an evac cold be just as fatal as hanging beachfront. Anyone close to shoreline ought be very concerned about Storm Surge. Even living behind a seawall can fail you. Good luck to all in the next few days... I'm thinking it was Celia. There were pockets in the storm with huge microbursts that tore stuff up really bad in localized areas. Overall it was much worse than predicted. I lived down there in 73-75 and kids told me about it. Beulah was one my G'ma talked about because it just moved 50 miles inland and rained for like a week straight. |
