Tipping is a scam. Basically, you are paying the wages on behalf of the owner because they are paying below minimum.

In Europe, you don't need to tip anybody because they get paid a fair wage from the owners. Plus, they add 10% when you sit outdoors or for large groups, so it's already included for servers that have to do a bit more work.

Why do bartenders expect as much as waiters?

Have you ever been to a bar? A real fucking bar lol, not Applebee's . Alot of time the place I got to is jam packed , 20 seats at the bar and like 5 tables full and only 1 waiter . She serves every single person there . If I'm there with friends we will all tip her atleast 5$ each . She is pretty damn good at her job .

But to answer , OP 15% is generous imo .

That's a Terrible point of view man . I used to deliver for Jimmy John's at minimum wage . By the time my shift was over I had made 25$+ an hour minus gas, so like 22 an hour . Sure sound alike a scam to me (sarcasm) .

Re: Is 15% tip to a bartender an insult?
Back in my youth I was working two jobs and had literally more money than I knew what to do with. I ate often at this one restaurant and I liked one of the waitresses.

One morning she seemed really down in the dumps, so on a whim I quietly left a $100 bill as a tip and wrote on the ticket that it was not a mistake, it was hers.

I went out to my car where I had a view of my table and watched as she started gathering the dishes, hoping she'd perk up and get excited over the money. Oh, boy. She saw it and froze, looking around to see if I was still around, then she just broke down crying. I got worried, that wasn't at all what I had in mind. I left befuddled.

A few days later I went back to that restaurant but my waitress wasn't there. One of the other waitresses spotted me and made a bee line for my table. She sat down next to me and told me that the manager was cutting back on help and my waitress's last day was that day I had left the tip. She was crying because she had also missed her rent and was about to be put out on the street, and that money was going to keep her and her child from being homeless.

I never did see her again, but I never forgot that you can change someone's life, just on a whim.

Back then a hundred dollar bill was like a ten spot to me. I was living cheap and stacking cash.

Tipping is an insult to the paying customer. Let the employer pay the bartender fairly and price the drinks accordingly.

Because at the bar they are trapped, can’t walk away from the customers like waiters do.

Pay them.

Re: Is 15% tip to a bartender an insult?
One of the best steak houses in town is at
the bottom of the hill here. Been run by the
same family for over 50 years, 3rd generation
is working there now.
When the city annexed their strip of highway,
they started selling beer. They have a lot of
competition out here now and are struggling,
except during football season, which is starting.

It's hard to find a local restaurant that's not
part of a chain and just a cover for a bar.
Seek them out frens, and be sure to tip your server.
You'll be treated like royalty there, I promise.
