Scandinavia is surprisingly heavily forested for how far north it is. In fact Finland is the most heavily forested country of all according to this. Very surprising with how far north they are. I always thought the most heavily forested parts of Europe would be countries like Germany, Poland, Austria and Switzerland. As those countries are at about the same latitude as the most heavily forested parts of North America and Russia. And like you said Scandinavia is at about the same latitude as Alaska and trees don't grow at all in the northern parts of Alaska, Canada, and Russia. Yet at the same latitude that's barren tundra in Alaska, Canada and Russia there's dense forest with big trees in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Very surprising indeed. |
