Re: Morning of 9/11 what were you doing?
I was asleep and a friend knocked on my door and woke me up and told me.

I went onto IRC (internet relay chat) and even on that day I remember someone typing "looks like a controlled demolition" in one of the chat channels.

Does anyone use IRC any more?
 Quoting: TheBlands

On the way to my father's house, heard the report of the first explosions at the rain towers, on the radio. asked my friend to let my then partner know, he is american. I arrived at my father's house in time to see the second explosion, my sister who lived nearby, had satellite tv , she went back and forth to her house checking for news. We saw the news report that building 7 had fallen while u could still see it in the background. My 3 sisters and I and my father just watched the news all day, we were shocked, we thought it was the beginning of world war. That evening my partner and I spoke to many of our Americans friends. A day I will always remember, that day brought many changes to our world. R.I.P. All those who lost their lives that day and those who continue to die due to illness related to being at ground zero

Off work, hung over, in the midst of a divorce and sleeping on a buddy's couch waiting for an apartment to be ready for move in... woke up & was walking through the kitchen & saw the first tv was on in the living room & he was watching a report about a 'light plane' that'd just crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers... the report had a cam on the smoke rising from the tower, live.

I thought it was a movie at first it was so surreal... and then I watched in disbelief as the second plane crashed, live.

Damnedest thing I've ever seen...

I was 17 and in foster care. That morning I had just gotten my foster sisters off to school, my foster mother was sitting in the living room and called me over just after the first plane hit, I watched the second hit. I'll never forget how alone I felt that day. I had only been in that foster home a few weeks.

I was working at Walgreens, I went to work at 10am completely out of it, watched lines around the block of people getting gas. Our shelves were emptied of all the first aid supplies. My boss wouldnt let us watch the news, or listen to the radio. I know he was just trying to keep us calm, but I'll never quite be able to forgive it. I was terrified because I grew up as a military brat, I knew what this would mean for my friends and family.

I just wanted my Daddy. Every year that loneliness hits me like a ton of bricks and I cant quite stop the tears.

One of the first films I watched shortly after the event was from a team of French filmmakers who were making a documentary about a local firehouse. They had some raw and uncensored footage, including that of the jumpers. I’ll never forget the sound it made when their bodies hit the awnings at the street level.

I think that documentary has been scrubbed from the internet. I have not been able to find it for years.

Slept through it.

Was in my senior year of college.

Woke up around 10:45 AM after both towers had already fallen.

Had a massive hangover. I drank at the bar the night before. It was 50 cent tequila shots (Monday night special).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12132946

Similar situation. I drank the night before and didn't wake up until after 11:00 am. Nobody in the house bothered to wake me up and tell me what was happening. I was a breaking news junkie at the time. I actually liked CNN back then, before I was woke. At the bar they had a TV on. I was watching the news story about Ahmed Shah Masood being assassinated by Al Qaida in Afghanistan. He was the main enemy of the Taliban. I wondered if Bin Ladin was doing this to protect himself for a coming attack on America. I was expecting a nuclear attack.

Re: Morning of 9/11 what were you doing?
I was in Mr. Bell's American History class (11th grade).

Sitting up front, because of my bad behavior.

We all saw the 2nd plane hit live, and he looked at me all wide eyed and said "Did you see that?" Like he couldn't believe his eyes.

After a few minutes, he looked at the class and said "you are all watching history right now."

Him and a few other teachers talked in the hallway for a while, and then class was over.

My next class, Ceramics, the jack leg wouldn't turn the TV on.

I was young and stupid at the time - had a red headed girlfriend and didn't understand how big it all was.

I was inside the E4 over Manhattan.
When Rome, NY where the sim was being run,
got their orders from Cheney
we landed the plane and allowed 9/11 to proceed
Fortunately we had a great bobblehead cut out at the FAA headquarters.

A perfect coup, we had DHS all set. Americans, pshaw.

Re: Morning of 9/11 what were you doing?
I was getting ready to leave with my husband to look at a landscaping job he'd just gotten. I had left the financial services industry I'd been in for over a decade. Still had and have many friends who are in. The TV was on and we watched the second plane hit the tower live.

It was surreal for me. I had worked in the North tower for almost a year when I started working for Wall Street firms. Went to work every day there, my firm had several floors up in the 70s, and had been to Windows on the World many times.

What I couldn't shake was how narrow the windows were up there and how we used to watch the helicopters below us. How high up and how desperate you would have had to be to knock out and jump out of those skinny windows. It still haunts me today.

The markets didn't open that morning, and I kept in touch with my friends on what was breaking on the wire services. After the Pentagon got hit we were all freaking out. We knew we were under attack and we knew it was gonna be bad for the markets, so we were happy for a non-opening. Grown men, my friends, were choking back tears of fright and disbelief.

Sept. 11 is always a difficult day for me psychologically.

I broke down into held-back tears every 10 or 15 minutes for the next 2 weeks. Even woke up in the middle of the night to get a good cry in. I probably should have gone and have that looked at but I didn't want the breakdown in my medical record. I'm fine, I lived.

I was at university. Walked into the lounge to grab a coffee only to discover everyone watching the television. Skipped classes that day and spent the day downing beer, watching updates on TV, and discussing issue with friends.

I saw 2nd plane hit. I knew that moment shit wouldn't be the same.

That and when the Pentagon was hit, we feared invasion.

My wife was downtown Pittsburgh, called her and told her to drop everything and leave the city, come home asap.

When plane in PA crashed, I worried for her. I recalled telling her to avoid the really tall buildings.

Was the early hours of the morning here in NZ. I was still awake, watching movies on our pay tv channels (Sky tv) and I had flicked over to one of the cable news channels and I saw the first tower of the World Trade Center on "fire" with the giant "hole" on the side of the building....looked pretty surreal at that stage...maybe just a tragic accident I thought; then the second airliner struck the second tower and I just said to myself WTF is this??

...then I hurried to wake my wife up saying..."Honey wake up...they are attacking America" and that is exactly what I said at the time because it was raw and in your face(even through the tv screen) and I remember at the time I was having difficulty just processing what the hell was happening.

Was on my way to work at an on-site corporate travel department listening to the Peter Boyles show on news radio 850 KOA Denver. Pete said that a small plane had hit the WTC.

Got to work and the agents on duty had gotten a call from our NYC office that it was big and bad. Called my wife who worked from home, told her to turn on the TV. We turned on a radio at work to find out more.

Started trying to find out the flight numbers of the planes involved to see if the company had any employees on board. Thankfully we did not.

Started getting calls from our travelers whose planes had landed all over the country. Told them to immediately rent a car, get water and non-perishable food and drive home. Our CFO was at our office in the UK so he was stranded for a while.

We had a small group of customers from Belgium that were at our HQ training on a product that were frantic to get home but there was nothing we could do with all flights except military grounded.

It was chaos for days, not to mention the shock of lives lost.

Re: Morning of 9/11 what were you doing?
For 30 years, I always took my birthday off from work and 9/11/2001 was no expception. I'd turned 49 shortly after midnight and was sleeping in late, or so I thought.

Like the OP, my Mom called and said "something's happened in NY"; CLICK.

I turned on the TODAY Show, saw the crawl on the screen and the smoke from the first hit and immediatly popped a VHS tape into the machine. I'd seen history unfold LIVE on TV before when Ruby shot Oswald and then-as-now was sucked into the tragedy as we all first wondered "what went wrong?" and then, "who could do this kind of thing?"

And -just like back in 1963- I was glued to that screen trying to absorb the enormity of what I was seeing. It had a surreal quality that part of my brain insisted, "this can't be happening" while the greater rational lobes slapped me in the face and screamed, "Oh, yes it IS!"

I ended up filling four tape cassettes over the next 24 hours as my recorder constantly whirred away -switching from network to network in the process- watching our stunned nation as it stopped in it's tracks.

And history repeated all over again.
