Quantum Entanglement within DNA | |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 76658155 Romania 09/11/2019 05:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | DNA can discern between two quantum states Prof. Ron Naaman of the Institute's Chemical Physics Department (Faculty of Chemistry) conducted research which appeared recently in Science, that shows that a biological molecule -- DNA -- can discern between quantum states known as spin. But biological molecules have another property: they are chiral. In other words, they exist in either "left-" or "right-handed" forms that can't be superimposed on one another. Double-stranded DNA molecules are doubly chiral -- both in the arrangement of the individual strands and in the direction of the helices' twist. Naaman knew from previous studies that some chiral molecules can interact in different ways with the two different spins. The researchers fabricated self-assembling, single layers of DNA attached to a gold substrate. They then exposed the DNA to mixed groups of electrons with both directions of spin. The biological molecules reacted strongly with the electrons carrying one of those spins, and hardly at all with the others. The longer the molecule, the more efficient it was at choosing electrons with the desired spin, while single strands and damaged bits of DNA did not exhibit this property. These findings imply that the ability to pick and choose electrons with a particular spin stems from the chiral nature of the DNA molecule, which somehow "sets the preference" for the spin of electrons moving through it. 'This paper described how passing a current through a monolayer of DNA double helices would favor one type of spin.' The DNA molecules are chiral, which means they can exist in two forms which are each other's mirror image -- like a left and right hand. The phenomenon was dubbed Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS), and over the last few years, several experiments were published which allegedly showed this CISS effect, even in electronic devices. University of Groningen Ph.D. student Xu Yang set out to create a generic model which could describe how spins would pass through different circuits under a linear regime (i.e. the regime that electronic devices operate in). 'These models were based on universal rules, independent of the type of molecule'. By publishing his model now, Yang hopes that more scientists will start building the circuits he has proposed, and will finally be able to prove the existence of CISS in electronic devices. It has been demonstrated that there is coherent conduction of electrons longitudinally along the DNA molecule through pi stacking interactions of the aromatic nucleotide bases, and it has also been demonstrated that electrons moving longitudinally along the DNA molecule are subject to a very efficient electron spin filtering effect as the helicity of the DNA molecule interacts with the spin of the electron. This means that, in DNA, electrons are coherently conducted along a very efficient spin filter. [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (secure)] |

In 2014, for example, scientists developed DNA-based wires showing it can conduct electricity a bit like metals. And in April this year, researchers at the University of Georgia made the world’s smallest diode (one of the fundamental building blocks of computing) from a strand of DNA just 11 base pairs long. In this case, DNA acts more like a semiconductor. The new work provides an understanding as to why a DNA molecule can have such different properties (metallic or semiconducting). In other words, there is no fuel source that corresponds to consciousness; therefore, there is no physical process that corresponds to consciousness! A key feature of the post-materialist approach is that of non-local consciousness, in which consciousness is not considered to be localized or confined to specific points in space, such as the physical brain and body, nor to specific points in time, such as the present. So the most interesting question is therefor, if I am not physical in nature.. what does that actually MEAN to be able to use a space suit, but not be the space suit (body).. and what does to have something called IMAGINATION, and how does consciousness use that to CReATE what we call "reality"... |

Red and near infrared wavelengths, which are capable of penetration into tissues, have potential for therapeutic applications. Combination of Cry2/CIB1 system with bacterial DNA-binding protein LexA was used to demonstrate light-inducible transcription activation in Drosophila melanogaster—both in cell culture and in vivo [37]. Recently, CRY2/CIB1 activation by blue light was joined with CRISPR technology to create a light-activated CRISPR/Cas9 effector (LACE) system. LACE was successfully employed to simultaneously and reversibly activate human IL1RN, HBG1/2, or ASCL1 promoters in HEK293T cells. An engineered bacterial DNA-binding LOV protein EL222 resulted in a luciferase reporter systems with highly linear response to blue light, rapid activation (< 10 s) and deactivation (< 50 s) kinetics and a large (> 100-fold) dynamic range of target protein expression in mammalian cells and zebrafish embryos. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76658155 Models of these vibrational modes started out as classical, binary models of the Van der Waals and Dipole-Dipole interactions. But, the emergence of quantum mechanical models in chemistry led some scientists to ponder on the possibility that these classical biological models could be pinned to a series of entanglements, which would explain the two biggest flaws of the classical systems: time and distance. The first paper that really grabbed my attention on the idea of quantum entanglement in DNA was a paper published by Elisabeth Rieper from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2010. Titled “Quantum entanglement between the electron clouds of nucleic acids in DNA”. The team came to this conclusion after setting up quantum harmonic oscillators to act as the distribution mechanism for electrons in a dipole-dipole interaction between each of the nucleic acids. When they set this up, they saw that the time taken for the oscillators to operate and the way in which they operated was the same as what was observed naturally within DNA. Thus, based on the energy within each nucleic acid, DNA could be a set of quantum entanglements that occur at room temperature. Just let me know if you'd like it pinned.... BTW, this deserves a pin: Quantum Entanglement Holds DNA Together, Say Physicists When the nucleotides bond to form a base, these clouds must oscillate in opposite directions to ensure the stability of the structure. Rieper and co ask what happens to these oscillations, or phonons as physicists call them, when the base pairs are stacked in a double helix. Phonons are quantum objects, meaning they can exist in a superposition of states and become entangled, just like other quantum objects. That’s possible because phonons have a wavelength which is similar in size to a DNA helix and this allows standing waves to form, a phenomenon known as phonon trapping. When this happens, the phonons cannot easily escape. One tantalising suggestion at the end of their paper is that the entanglement may have an influence on the way that information is read off a strand of DNA and that it may be possible to exploit this experimentally.
