Amazon ‘smart’ doorbell company partnered with 400+ police departments to surveil your neighborhood
Over 400 US police forces have access to the video footage generated by Amazon’s “smart” Ring doorbells, creating an unprecedented - and largely unaccountable - surveillance network outside existing legal structures.

Video-sharing partnerships allow law enforcement to automatically request video from Ring owners within a designated timeframe and area, giving them access to millions of cameras that police claim have proved invaluable for investigations. Officers are not supposed to receive access to live-streaming video, and users can deny the footage requests – which come in the form of emails thanking them for “making your neighborhood a safer place” –but they don’t always have the option of saying “no.”

Usually I'm against police state surveillance. But this might be useful. These cams are filming the road, not the inside of your home. If it helps catching mail thieves, home invaders and other scum, I would be OK with it.

can't really blame the human element of "corruption" to useful methods of solving crimes? same goes to all the asshats that hide behind alphabet agencies, gotta weed out all the bad apples, blaming the "whole" doesn't solve anything.

Still don't see a problem.

I have a regular security cam next to my front door. I provided footage to cops and it helped catching an arsonist who liked to set random cars on fire in my town.

it doesn't even matter anymore-anyone can be falsely accused using deep fake videos. the doors on the digital prison slammed shut long ago and if you don't have deep pockets for a video forensic expert, you're fucked. Most are just now realizing, my kids will never know true freedom.

I have a Ring camera and it's a piece of shit. Always misses motion and starts recording too late. I've stood outside at night moving around in front of it and sometimes the motion detector light doesn't even turn on.

Honest to god that surveillance doorbell tool helps.

We have door to door knockers ( that supposedly sell shit and you never know if their up to no good and criminals that case joints and guess what that camera does. gives a chance for facial recognition each time those idiots do that. And guess what that tells the police department. Who to look for. And I am 100% ok with it.

This is a sensualist story.

The cops aren't accessing cameras without the owners permission but they way the story is headlined it alludes that they are. They have to request to get access to view a video. They're just making a framework to make this process seamless.

It would be no different than if a policeman came and knocked on your door and said, between such and such times there was a crime can we get a copy of the video. They're just making the process electronic. You can opt-in and opt out at any time.
