I know that 121.5 MHz transmissions are quickly triangulated by satellites, ground and sea based receivers. It's the "International Air Distress" or guard frequency. It's used in aircraft Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) as well by some adventurers in remote areas for emergencies.

Prank broadcasting on VHF/UHF guard frequencies is like prank calling 911. Military and civilian authorities will quickly hunt down the perp.

My guess, some criminal drug gang network made the calls while they ship in container loads of fentanyl or cocaine elsewhere.

They ain't too bright sometimes.

A former co-worker was USCG on drug-interdiction missions. Drug smugglers knew currents and tides of where/when to drop off bundles for specific pickup locations. Problem was the USCG and USN knew those same currents and tides, plus they had sea and airborne surveillance assets.
