Gas prices take time to reflect the price of oil. Oil is the raw material. When the raw material prices go up, then the finished product (in this case gas) will go up in price. That said the futures prices have jumped dramatically higher for oil. That is the reason for the strategic reserve release, to calm the market.

U.S. is now a Net exporter of oil which means more oil produced than consumed in the country. U.S. dont need to tap into emergency reserves.
