Should rich heirs remain in social housing?
If a person inherits a large sum of money, is it ethical for them to remain living in social housing that was heavily subsidised by the Govt and is now a low rent when there are hard working people who need affordable accommodation?

I know two males who both inherited large sums of money when their parents died and who have continued living in low rent accommodation which is not really suitable for their needs.

One of these men has a part time job as a lecturer, he is middle aged and has never married or had any children. His best friend claims he never wanted children, although he had a long time girlfriend who desperately wanted children. He lives in a tiny, very squalid apartment which is really only suitable for young students. He keeps trying to find an elegant female to date but when they discover how he chooses to live, they tend to give up after a while. Well the last two did.

The other comes from a very elite background. He went to boarding school as a child, he has one very high profile relative who is a millionaire and holds a very high ranking job. He is also quite famous in his particular field. His parents were highly paid doctors and he inherited large sums of money when they died. He lives in partial squalor and spends his days taking huge amounts of snuff up his nostrils. His apartment is covered in snuff. As is he when he makes an appearance. He's nice enough as a person but he's sitting on a fortune and hogging a flat that a younger person who is struggling could really benefit from.

Is there something wrong with these people? I mean do they not want to progress their lives at all? Are they planning to die alone and miserable. Maybe Cliff Richard's song Bachelor boy has left a lasting impression on the way they think.

There is nothing glamorous about their lifestyles. I just dont get it. What will they do with their money? One can only have another 10 years or so to live while the other does not have enough room to swing a cat.

Who knows if they gave their inheritance to what they consider a good cause. Or if it's encumbered in some way.

I guess the real question is simple, what business is it of yours?

You know, normally I wouldnt be all that interested but the one with the girlfriend problems makes it my business by telling me in great detail all his personal problems. And we're not really close friends. I think his lifestyle would improve vastly if he bought himself a decent property to reflect his age and status in life. I have told him this. He said he was looking at a house the other day but I dont think he has any intention of moving. He said he didnt want to break into his savings.

The other one unfortunatly has stepped on my toes a few times and so has become my problem. Although, as I said he is nice enough as a person.

The idea that they might have given away their inheritances and chosen to live in squalor is laughable. I know them to be petty theives, so I think it a bit unlikely really.

I guess you could, if you're sufficiently exercised about it, contact the housing council.

I wouldn't but then I'm not the one who started this thread.

I dont think it's against housing rules to gain some money. I just wondered what is up with their mentality. Why would you choose to live in squalor when you could have a decent lifestyle and enjoy yourself more, improve your social life and have a bit of fun.

Life is too short to waste it like that. And you know, the apartments wouldnt be so bad if they made some effort. But they would still be tiny and inadequate to have a decent lifestyle. I just dont get it.
