Anonymous Coward User ID: 76512891 Canada 09/18/2019 10:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Bizarre experience yesterday. I nearly died from Anaphylaxic Shock. The Amberlamps and two EMTs got an epi pen into me right as my airway was nearly closed and I was losing consciousness. Quoting: Azaziah The reason I am posting is that I am trying to find out what the trigger was. Scary to be uncertain of the causal agent. Important facts: I am 6 feet tall, 51 yo, male, active, but probably 40 pounds overweight. Married, three kids, own my business, work quite a bit and generally feel good. No chronic health issues, zero medications, no known diseases. Two weeks ago, my younger brother visited from out of town. We had not seen each other for a year or so, and he says “Man, you’ve gotten fat.” Truth hurts, but it can be effective. Started Keto two days later. A first for me. Almost zero carbs, lots of protein and fats. The first week I missed carbs a lot (bread and pasta are my main poisons of choice), but I stuck it out. Felt okay, just kind of irritable. Lost about 4 pounds. End of the second week the Keto ‘flu’ hit with a vengeance. My understanding is that this is a sign that the body is making the fundamental transition from burning carbs for energy to burning fat for energy. Nausea, headache, diarrhea, and more. I was grade-A miserable, but two days later it was pretty much over, and when I used a urine test strip, for the first time, I was solidly producing ketones and therefore Ketosis was happening. That was yesterday morning. I had farm eggs and sausage for breakfast. Lunch was pot roast from a friend’s grass-raised steer. It felt great to be pretty much over keto flu. Now, next comes the possible trigger, though it is hard to believe. I picked up some MCT oil a few days ago. It is often used to support ketosis, because it is zero carb, but packed full of healthy fats (Medium Chain Triglycerides). It simply highly refined coconut oil. I eat a lot of regular coconut oil, but never MCT. I mixed about a teaspoon in coffee, and sipped on it after lunch. 4 hours later, feeling normal, suddenly I notice my lips and tongue are swelling. I have not eaten anything for hours, have not been stung or bit that I am aware of, and I am sitting at my desk realizing I am entering Anaphylaxic Shock. I have no known allergies, so I do not have an epi pen lying around. Very rapidly my arms, legs, and trunk are red and swollen. Sweating profusely. It is getting harder to draw a breath and my vision is getting poor, fast. We live very rural, and I am home alone. No help. The farmer who owns the land next to our home & shop just decided to drive to his equipment barn and hook up his bush hog. As I stumble out the front door to call 911, there he was. He called 911. EMTs show up about 12 minutes later (pretty good for our distance from the hospital). They hit me with an epi, start fluids, put me on oxygen, and get me to the hospital. They released me a few hours later. I went to sleep about ten and woke up at four a.m. way too happy to be alive to go back to sleep. Frankly I feel pretty good. What does GLP say? I need to figure out what the trigger was, so I can avoid it… BTW, I am not a secret agent, a whistle-blower, and I do not have dirt on the Clintons, so I have no reason to think some toxic agent was daubed onto my keyboard by the deep state. Most certainly the trigger was mct oil- there must be some contaminant in it. The other thing to check on is a vagus nerve seizure. Your vagus nerve acts like a reset button on a computer. Trigger the vagus nerve and you'll pass out/stop breathing... Then IF you wake up, you'll be a "different" person than before the vagus nerve thing.. |

Blocking the induction of tolerance is one thing, but creating a new allergy is another. Th2 cells produce various messengers or cytokines which aid in the development of allergic inflammation. A Th2 response is tied to inflammatory conditions like asthma and atopic dermatitis [4]. So I might have experienced a sort of cytokine storm? Like frikken ebola induces? ACK! |

But mostly, maybe just dont eat stupid shit fad diets. |

On first sign, epi, chew two benadryl and take a zantac. Something about the antacid, cant remember, wife is a nurse and told me but... But honestly the epi is the life saver and the only known treatment for Anaphylaxis. Good luck! Scary shit for sure. |

I had eaten something different before each episode. I went to an allergist and he did test me for mast cell syndrome and I’m negative for that, could something else about the keto diet be triggering anaphylaxis in some people? Ps Congrats on still being alive!!!!! |

Interesting thing is, I had taken it upon first waking, without eating and the ER doc who gave me epi told me that that was the reason...there was no food in my digestive system for it to absorb off of and that caused the shock. |
