Licensing is pretty easy, I suggest you buy the book and practice software directly from AARL. They are more expensive, but the questions you will practice with are literally the exact same questions that are on the test. Make sure to get the current year.

Also, at most of the testing centers they will allow you to take the next level test for the hell of it, so it doesn't hurt to look at that as well.

All in all I probably only studied 20 hours and got a 33/35, which is easily passing. I did have a background in electronics though so I didn't need to learn that at all.

Not only is amateur radio a fascinating hobby but the skills and equipment you acquire in the process of becoming a ham could prove invaluable in a SHTF scenario. I say that because in that scenario I would guess that virtually every other mode of communication will be gone. Cell phones (etc.) and internet will be history,,, but ham radio will still be up and running.

Becoming a licensed amateur radio operator is not at all difficult. There are currently three classes of license - technician, general, and amateur extra class. You must begin your journey into the world of amateur radio by obtaining a technician class license. The best way to prepare for the examination is to purchase a CURRENT copy of the technician class license study guide. This study guide will provide information on everything you will need to know to pass the examination. AND,,, in the back of the study guide will be a test bank of multiple choice questions. If you are preparing with a CURRENT study guide you are guaranteed that the 35 multiple choice questions on the test that you take will come from that test bank of questions. You can obtain a copy of the study guide from an organization called the ARRL, the American Radio Relay League. The ARRL is the nationwide organization for amateur radio operators. I've got the General class license, took the tests a few years ago, and honestly don't know a single thing about frequencies or how to program that damn buttfung radio I got on amazon.

We even tried to learn Morse code... I can spell my name with the high beams, lol.

You don't need to know shit to pass the tests, just study the questions for hours and hours enough to memorize the majority of the answers.
