I own a handheld receiver, but am not licensed to operate. A license is all of $25 (I think) I'm just lazy. I'm up to snuff on my Morse code, if it's still a requisite.

Local hamfest or check craigslist. Usually the guys at the hamfests are honest about what they are selling.

I've seen Kenwood TS520's go for $150. That's a 100 watt HF transceiver. Old, but darn near bullet proof even for today.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74232425

How hard would it be to hookup one of the older hf rigs to a PC so you can run digital modes on fldigi?
 Quoting: DeplorableDoomsdayGuy

what do you consider "older"
tube finals or all tube?

about all you could hook up would be audio in , audio out and ptt
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77281341

Some of the older Kenwoods from the '80s & '90s. Stuff was still made fairly well then, unlike today where you're better off buying new than trying to repair. Right now, I have a Yaesu FT450 which I like because it's fairly compact, has a builtin ant tuner, and a digital port.

 Quoting: 15666.44

Yeah, you can get a CB and an illegal power amp for fairly cheap compared to HAM, CB using SSB technically isn't really much different than a 10M ham radio. I know some CB guys will buy a 10M rig to convert to 11M because the 10 M rigs have more juice. With a CB even using SSB unless you working skip your not going very far, especially with the 5 watts thats allowed. You'd also have to make a lot of modifications to rig to run any type of digital mode. And if you're going to go through all of that trouble chances are that you'll be able to pass the Tech & General with hardly any difficulties. So why not take the test so you can work more than one band. You can broadcast TV, talk to ISS, send email, and use satellites on the ham bands.

Yes, but I haven't for years.

I built a repeater, my own receiver and transmitter from components even designing my own cavities and PCB's.

I'll not state the band, call sign, or location [doxing fears] and ran it with an ACC controller and auto patch for years.

I loved the voice that ACC gave it.
 Quoting: Louis in Richmond

I operated out of grid Charlie Mike 98. I believe repeaters are still required to xmit their callsigns (usually in code) every 15 mins. Same thing on aircraft Automated Weather Stations (AWS) and VHF Omnidirectional Range (VOR) navigation stations. That's where knowing code comes in handy. You can verify the correct station.

I really enjoy running multiple SDR's off my computer. I can receive air traffic, WX satellites and of course numbers stations. They can decode RTTY, morse code, radio packets and DMR transmissions.

Many GLPers are familiar with this WebSDR site for Skyking listening.

.... .- -- / ... .- -. -.. .-- .. -.-. ....
Once upon a time, there lived a magnificent race of animals that dominated the world through age after age. They ran, they swam, and they fought and they flew, until suddenly, quite recently, they disappeared. Nature just gave up and started again. We weren't even apes then. We were just these smart little rodents hiding in the rocks. And when we go, nature will start again. With the bees, probably. Nature knows when to give up.

The radical left religion of climate change advocacy is rotting your brain, but that's what happens when one is intellectually inbred.

Your ass has been pumped more than the Saudi oil fields!

Trump is a giant wake up call to all those idiots who has been told they are special and has been raised in a childhood full of participation medals.

Beware of anyone who says they can predict earth's future climate.

You must have a circumcision scar on your neck.

Everyone dies alone. But if you meant something to someone, if you helped someone, or loved someone. If even a single person remembers you, Then maybe you never really die. And maybe, this isnt the end at all.

The climate change cult is so important to socialist politicians, and so protected by the media, that it survived the massive Climategate scandal, which featured the publication of emails that demonstrated climate scientists were conspiring to suppress inconvenient data.

Leftism is low hanging fruit for political idiots.

I have a couple of those my self. I plan on putting one in my truck running off a Raspberry Pi and RTL-TCP. I bought a cheap travel router that's only 2" x 2" so I have a small wifi network and use my phone running SDR-Touch to control it. Then hook my phone up to the truck's radio via bluetooth. So it's all fairly compact and easy to hide out of sight, I basically plan on using it as a scanner. Even if having a scanner in your vehicle is illegal in whatever state you're in, there is normally an exception for licensed operators. I just keep a copy of my license with my registration and insurance if I ever get pulled over and asked about it.

What sdr program(s) do you run? I would love to get a HackRF One. The Chinese, in typical Chinese fashion, have started selling counterfeits on eBay for $100.

No just the signal. But, that doesn't mean you can't be found. Some hams love doing fox hunts where someone places a transmitter somewhere, and see who can find it first. Also, it wouldn't be very hard for 3 hams with directional antennas to narrow your location down. If your planning on operating on any ham bands without a license I would suggest against it, especially on a repeater. There are a lot of retired hams who have nothing better to do than sort of act as airwave police, and bust people for operating illegally. Even licensed I've had people come on the frequency and tell me something like I've violated fcc rules because you're supposed to give your call sign every ten minutes and that ten minutes was up 37 seconds ago. Yeah some of the old farts can get that petty and love to see themselves as the enforcers of the rules against those young whippersnappers.

If you buy a Baofeng be careful of what frequency you're on because they can transmit on police bands. Also if you do want one, buy one now, because the UV5R will be illegal to sell in the US on the 30th.

It can vary country to country. Family Radio Service (FRS) HT's don't require a license to operate. Just don't reprogram your Baofeng and transmit out of FRS band. Receiving out of band is a legal gray area, since the radio was modified from its intended use. Same deal even with a HAM radio license. I couldn't legally use it to transmit in 2m or 70cm amateur radio bands. That's why previous poster stated to buy the Baofeng UV5R now.

Earned my ticket back in 1968. Been off the air for four years after divorce. Ran HF packet, rtty, slow scan, and still have two repeaters operating. I loved the Collins, Hallicrafters, Drake and most of the vintage gear.

Well... Up until today, you could get decent quality Chinese units at a fair price. I got a quad band 50W transceiver with cross-band repeater capability for $200 four years ago, technically it's an automotive unit but with a regulated power supply from crapshack it serves very well as a base unit.

A well designed and tuned antenna is the crown jewel of a good rig.
I have a dicone antenna from crapshack as well for 2m and UHF bands, a home made j pole and yagi for 2m, and a modified Terminator II CB antenna set for 10m.
The yagi has telescoping and folding elements, highly portable. At 10' up, it has a clear transmit radius of 75 miles connected to a 5 watt handheld transceiver--- Baofeng UV5-RA.

Unfortunately, the FCC has banned sale of practically all import transmitters as they generally have the capability to transmit on unlisenced frequencies.

Thanks guys for the good info. I currently own a Baofeng BF-F8 that I never transmit on, just listen. I may one day see about getting technicians license so I can use it. I just ordered the UV5R model for $20 since they will not be sold soon. Is there any difference between the BF-F8 and UV5R? They look very similar.. I ordered the UV5R as a backup in case the BFF8 were to die.
