If you want to know what our real capabilities are when it comes to lasers, look at the last decade of crop circles. We've had this technology for quite some time. In mere seconds huge areas are zapped.

My guess is that in private meetings we tell nations who step out of line, "Hey, have you seen those wonderful crop circles we've been making? We could design one for your forehead if you don't cut the crap like yesterday. No one will see us coming, and you'll be deader than a wheat stalk."

It's a game of numbers. If you have a highly reflective surface that reflects 99% of the light hitting it at the specific wavelength of the laser, it still absorbs 1% of the energy. Pump up the laser energy to megawatt range, and the mirror will absorb tens of kilowatts.

I reality, it is difficult to design a mirror which will reflect 99% in the entire IR-VIS range, so the absorbed enery is likely to be higher.

If I were designing laser resistent missiles, I'd put in a mirror finish, but focus more on ablative layer beneath the mirror. Ablative shield absorbs heat by evaporating. For instance, the heat shield in space capsules.

The weapon needs a resonance scan capability meaning paint the target with a variety of wavelengths and what is not reflected back is absorbed which is the material's resonance. I don't think they have invented a free electron laser powerful enough or small enough to do that.
