"Rats have long been blamed for spreading the Black Death around Europe in the 14th century. Specifically, historians have speculated that the fleas on rats are responsible for the estimated 25 million plague deaths between 1347 and 1351."

Rats are immune to Yersinia pestis, fleas can't swallow infected rat blood and jump on humans and vomit and now human infected, spreads through droplets. Then spreads human to human. Humans spread it faster than rats.

As the fleas run out of rats to feed off of they will seek other blood sources, humans.
