Blind Melon... Update: Singer Shannon Hoon’s Home Videos turned Documentary is finally released!
Update 6/28/20:

Update: Shannon’s 52nd Birthday is today; born 9/26/1967... and evidently he shares the same birthday with our (GLP) great family member:
Louis in Richmond!

Blind Melon’s first record was released 27 years ago today on 9/22/92...Good grief time flies! It’s wasn’t until summer of 93 before the “bee girl” arrived to spread the misconception this band was some goofy spin doctors bubblegum one-hit wonders when in fact they were actually the opposite...the real deal whom a lot of people, especially from growing up in nightmarish small towns and or stifling environments could really relate with back then...

So overlooked and underrated; cut short before their prime. Shannon would’ve loved the internet/social media. I wish Shannon could have seen and utilized YouTube and while I’m at it, I also wish that late comedian Mitch Hedberg had seen/utilized Twitter.

Documentary about Shannon will hopefully be released someday...
“All I Can Say” is an immersive view into the life and world of an artist navigating the 1990s...

Shannon Hoon, the lead singer of Blind Melon, routinely filmed himself from 1990 to 1995. The footage captures the sum trajectory of Hoon’s career. It begins with his roots in rural Indiana, follows his move to Los Angeles, where he forms Blind Melon, and watches their stars rise as they become emblematic figures of music video culture. All the while, Hoon navigates the trappings of substance abuse, which ultimately took his life. The film begins and ends with footage that Hoon captured on the day that he died of an overdose.

I wholeheartedly agree. The song Change by Blind Melon is in my top three songs of all time. Probably number 1 if I were pressed on the matter.

This song from 1972 that I stumbled upon sounds so much like Shannon on this track it’s seriously quite uncanny...to the point of spooky!
And from that song I learned how they literally gave Geronimo a Cadillac and paraded him around taking pictures of him “driving” it while also wearing a suit. He looks so sad in the picture I saw, but I digress.... check this spookiness out.

Weiland was so underrated! If you think about it, back then as far as the spotlight goes and during the whole image media onslaught, that dude kept up with Cobain, Staley and Vedder ALL at the same time, then went on to give Axl a run for his historical figurative throne.

The entire STP band was underrated and criminally robbed in some respects, then as fate would have it they ironically were called a Pearl Jam clone band...when it was actually the other way around...
It’s a little known FACT that their very first record (when they were called Mighty Joe Young) released in 1990 was released before Pearl Jam’s “Ten” and was clearly in the corduroy front pocket of Eddie Vedder when he flew from San Diego (STP’s stomping grounds as well) up to Seattle to join/formPearl Jam...
Pearl Jam basically stole the blueprint from STP for their “Ten” debut record (and added their own amazing Mother Love Bone touch, of course)...

Too cool! Funny you mention Ozzy... when Shannon wasn’t flailing and jumping around (that was rare) he worked the staged VERY similar to the Oz man!

OP, I never expected to see a thread about this. I knew Shannon and his Mother. I was living in West Lafayette, IN (Purdue University territory) as a a Store Manager of a premium athletic specialty retailer. He cam in a few times but I had know idea he would be moving to LA but knew he was a musician. His Mother came in quite often and I got to know her well. Beautiful person.

When his band took off after connecting to Axle Rose from GNR who was from the same area I was happy for him. I remember when his video with the “bumble bee” girl became a big deal his Mother was in the store about 2 weeks afterwards and we talked as she was so proud of him.

When he died it was a little personal for me. Tragic to say the least. I never saw his Mother again. It must have devastated her as I know it would have me should I have lost a child.

Thanks for posting OP. 5 Stars my friend!

You’re welcome. You inspired me to get on YouTube to watch both the GNR video “Don’t You Cry Tonight” and Blind Melon’s hit “No Rain” for the first time in 20 years. I will never forget his Mother and the stories she told me about him growing up.

I also know stories about Axle, even though I never met him, I had employees that went to school with him. The stories say a lot about his character and inspiration. He was bullied big time. Made fun of a lot.

I saw them a year before all the bee girl buzz at the Ritz in NYC summer '92
They opened foe Live, Public Image Lmtd. And Big Audio Dynamite

They hands down were the best, I was like who are they! , as I had gone to see Johnny Rotten and Mick Jones, bought the album when it came out that fall

Btw Live sucked horribly, they were promoting their first album, their record co. Sent them on tour for 1 1/2 years And then they recorded ' throwing Copper' and then after they went right back to sucking

Evidently so did Shannon’s dad... When he saw the video he said out loud “what the bleep is wrong with him, does he have _____?” I don’t want to say the disease out of respect for some that may be battling it...It was regarding his “dancing moves”... that was a silly video and such a bad misrepresentation of what they were truly about. Thanks for the post and sharing your memory!

Wow! You are one of the lucky ones to see them on that tour! So are the folks who saw them open for Alice In Chains and Ozzy! My favorite show was at the Mercury Cafe in Denver... it was something like their second show going out on their own crammed in the van tour... there were maybe 30 people there total and the “stage/riser” was/is literally 6 inches tall...but they played as if it was Madison Square Garden...

Shannon would’ve turned 52 today.

This video of them opening up for The Rolling Stones in 1994 shows exactly what a TRUE “front man” legend he was... the older crowd aren’t really paying much attention while finding their seats (totally understand/respect that)... Shannon truly knew how to work a stage no matter how small or large...

Happy Birthday Shannon! You touched far more souls with your music than you ever realized or could comprehend...

Birthday bump
Play some Blind Melon LOUD today if y’all can!

Shannon used to often say the old adage “every day above ground is a great day”. One of my very favorite memories is when he abruptly stopped me mid-diatribe complaining about a bad tattoo...he put his hands on my shoulders and while smiling ear to ear he gently said “hey, hey, hey...don’t ever forget this...some of the BEST things in LIFE ....are BROKEN”...
He truly was one righteous dude; always abided, always genuine.
