Berkey filters $100/pair and quantity 2 five gallon buckets work great. The Upper bucket will need some small wholes drilled in the bottom to let the stem of the filters through.

Berkey Backpacker model here, needs one filter. You can throw mud in it and get water lol

I will post all I got for water later ok

Or you could just use ash from your fire and sand. Has worked for thousands of years. Those filters gonna run out/gum up quick.

At least you did something, so kudos for that. In a real SHTF situation, eggs will better be hard boiled and pickled, flour for huntsman bread and meat, well, that's a luxury that will last a couple days only. And indeed, water is the main priority by far. I see people here and in some other places obsessed with guns, these are the ones that never done what you did. Find, purify and store water is #1. Much more important than guns, clothes and even shelter and food.

Of course your experience is extremely valuable, most people never try a REAL thing. I mean, with a whole trailer of stuff, cars and all the modern stuff, doens't count at all. For the thing to be really worth it, get only what you can carry. And I mean YOU can carry, not your truck.

Did you get more physical water? Or go with a filtration system?

Even if you get ahold of a couple “water purification straws” and a hanging filtration bag, don’t wait too long. You need the water to sustain life.

BERKEY is the way to go. I use them at home with their filter system. Gravity feed and they come with a stainless device that the filter are mounted in. They filter everything out. Best tasting water I have ever had.

Such great thoughts. Thanks for posting them. Funny, as we were eating our eggs I was thinking about our chickens, realizing they might not make it all the way through a SHTF situation. So many thoughts, ideas, realizations this weekend. Time was slower too, or at least it seemed slower. Much to do though without the instant machines and electricity we are accustomed to.

Bingo, but optimally you should filter and boil. Boiling doesn't get rid of say arsenic and filtering isn't effective against some microbes. And remember folks, you can't filter fallout contrary to public opinion. How do you filter a broken atom? Cleaner, sure. Clean enough that I mean gonna drink it? Not until last resort.

Karma pinned for useful info. Many do not practice scenarios. My plan is to bug in shtf, but you must also be prepared if your domicile is hit in some way. Fire, flood, etc. you must have the capability of moving quickly to a secondary or third location. Also think about what you can load quickly in a vehicle , but also what you can load in packs if your vehicle/transportation is no longer viable. Learn land navigation using a topographical map and compass . Bring at least a handcrank SW radio( 20-30 bucks) so you have some sort of comm access that keeps you informed. You can go up from there on comms ( CB/ Ham) but at least have a way to hear info. Also, during a national emergency, you would not need a ham license to transmit, you don’t need any license just to listen.

The upper bucket will house the berkey filters. For convenience you could even put a water spigot on the lower bucket or just use a ladle. The upper bucket will contain the dirty water and the lower bucket will be the clean water.

GO Berkey® Kit
[link to www.berkeyfilters.com (secure)]
The GO Berkey™ Kit can be used for biking or hiking or can simply follow you to the office or school. Small enough to fit in a limited space, like a backpack, and powerful enough to clean water pulled from nearby streams, the Go Berkey kit is optimal for emergency situations and physical activities where you need frequent, fresh, clean water.

Good for you!

Years ago we tried a weekend of eating from our preps. One big pot of bean soup with spam.

Made it only one day, not only do you tire quickly of the same awful tasting food but it really messes with your digestion, I was not prepared for that aspect

Grabbed our bug out bags and set up camp in an out of the way place. We used no electricity, sorted out our individual jobs of who will do what if/when/as needed and it was a great learning experience. We made coffee a couple different ways with different pots/sources. We cooked an assortment of foods and discovered what pans work better for pancakes, which pans worked better for hamburgers, and other items. Not everything tasted great. Burned the first couple of eggs, then after a couple changes with our fire the eggs and other food greatly improved. We also used two different stoves besides the fire pit area. All in all we learned a lot.We took pleanty of notes. It definitely was worth it to get out of our comfy home and practice a little bit. The MRE “test” sure brought back a lot of memories.

I recommend everyone try to find a way to practice, master their survival skills before you need them. You never know what small item you’ll wish you had remembered to have with you when you can’t easily go grab it.
