#1 - check for cold/broken solder connections

#2 - Use some contact cleaner (electronic) inside of the switch for temporary relief

Just tape a piece of lamp wire to the selector and let it lay on the ground while youre playing

Or get your wife to hold the selector while you play

But seriously just check solder spots and then once everything is good look into waxing your pickups.

It's a $5 or $10 switch, replace it. Things with moving parts eventually wear out. You could try some DeOxit Gold spray on the contacts, but that's more $$ for a can than a new switch.

Re: pickup selector on my guitar has started to glitch out - hows best to fix it.
Try working the switch a couple hundred times. Contacts might be dusty; maybe... Next step is to spray some decent Contact Cleaner into the switch openings in the case, which means removal from the pickguard or top.

There are some plug/play pickup sets, but most replacements will involve soldering. Take pix of the switch or draw a wire-color diagram if need to replace. Might also find a loose solder which is why you have the glitch. use a 15 to 25w solder gun, no need for much heat...

While at it, also check your output jack.

Fender type "wheel" selectors will easily get dirty. Lots of crap left in guitar bodies from routing. Inspect everything. Probably just needs a good spray w/contact cleaner and working the switch few hundred times to clean the contacts.

Be sure to use correct screwdriver(s) and protect your finish from accidental scratches. good Luck~!

yes and if it is really old well used guitar, you might need to have switch replaced.

they do have a lifespan based on how many times contacts are swiped.

Maybe learning a skill like soldering wouldn’t be so bad...

nothing hurts my fingers, 30 yrs of callouses. Just rather play a decent instrument. They are fucking ugly to boot. Absolutely tacky. Number 1 guitar played by fans of pro wrestling, lol.

Bernie Rico died in 1999.
The guitars made today are absolute garbage, but back in the 70’s they were the best on the market. They weren’t all pointy, but most were.

It sounds like you don’t feel comfortable taking tools to your guitar, take it to a shop and they can fix it up in minutes.

Likely just lint in the switch if it’s crackly.

Nevermind I read through..

What i normally do is get in there pull out the selector check the solder is still intact.. if it is intact but just too crackily or just not selecting what I do is get a think piece of fine grain sand paper like 200 grit or something and just cut a small piece and fish it in between the contact. Sometimes some dust or something just got on there and you just need to expose some raw copper. That usually worked on any Epiphones or cheap guitars I had. Never had to do it with any American made gear though to be honest.
