It used to be illegal for a company to buy back its own stock.

Now it is legal again and its the only source of buying going on in the stock market.

They call it returning value to shareholders. (the rich get richer)

Those profits should be used as investments to spur innovation and to increase productivity.

High levels of corporate debt are suddenly a whole lot more worrisome than they were just a couple of months ago.
U.S. financial account figures from the Federal Reserve released Friday showed the amount of money U.S. companies have borrowed continues to swell. Domestic nonfinancial companies had $9.95 trillion in debt outstanding in the second quarter, an increase of $1.2 trillion from just two years ago.

Precisely.
Seriously doubt any of these former CEOs are going to live in poverty now, they've feathered their nest and have their good old boy network to keep them working under the radar.

I think you are right Slush fund money laundering. The CEO of eBay? How in the hell can they be bankrupt? All they do is collect a premium & provide a website. They must be laundering money. There's no way they are bankrupt. This premium goes directly to eBay, out of your pay. No way!
